The votes were mostly from people who knew very little about the engines listed except the GM . That engine is noted for being bulletproof and parts available and not expensive and noted as reliable so it is no wonder it received the most votes. But if the details of the design were used to get the most votes it would have fallen back as the valve train and combustion chamber design is straight out of the middle ages.
But the vote was a popularity contest, not an advance design contest and the correct engine won.

The SBC is very inexpensive to build and modify. Very inexpensive. It is a staple with racers all over NA. However you inexplkicably left out the mighty BBC - why?

All engines shown are good. However, the Chv. small block V8 was and continues to be the best. The engine's horsepower has evolved from 100+/- in beginning to 650HP. With a little tuning and software twisting 700+ HP is available from same basic structure.
You forgot probably the best engine of all time! The 3800 V6 by General Motors!
