However, for all the reasons he is for them, I am against them. The schools have cooperate backers (it's a way to privatize public education); they're anti-unions; their discipline methods are harsh; and they certainly use the lottery system to prevent "unwanted" students (Special Ed., Ell, etc) and it tips the test scores in their favor. This editorial also implies that parents who anti-charter schools or have struggling or special ed students are too lazy to apply for these schools. If the Charter school model is so excellent, let city and state government implement the model in all public schools and get rid of the charter school designation. Also, some schools in NYC are called Charter Schools but they're no run by private organizations but by an individual communities and parents--they're known as Community Charter Schools.
One of my pet peeves are Charter Schools. Getting off my soap box now.

I'm really interested in how you guys touched on Charter schools. Here in New Zealand our former [Capitalist, right leaning] government implemented this a couple of years ago. With a new [centre to left leaning] government, these are now being reviewed for how effective and viable they are as an option. Here it seems more targeted at Polynesian/Māori families with 'Pacific' or Māori words in the name of the schools. This demographic and the suburbs these are in are largely poor lower class. So it is surprising to hear that US Charter schools could be targeted at kids from rich backgrounds [please correct me if I understood that wrong].
I don't have kids and don't work in the Education sector to know the difference in qualities but it does concern me that our Charter schools have business input and the possibility of non-qualified teachers being allowed to teach children.
