I think there are certain that show an important commitment and valid contribution over the years (eg HIMSS), others which are medical specialty specific and have even more criteria (eg ACP) and then some which are likely weaker. Would be interesting to have a single source that rated the power/importance of them all!

As a holder of one and soon to be another, I think it shows commitment to the field and willingness to participate in the public give and take of intellectual debate. While certainly not a perfect system, peer review is the best system we have to vett ideas.
