How risky are Mexico's highways in terms of security?

I drove from Seattle to San Jose del Cabo last summer. Besides the roads not always being the best safety was never a question. The military was patrolling and staffing all the checkpoints which was a bonus. Next I'm not an idiot. No matter where you go you can meet bad people doing bad things however if you aren't an idiot you are more likely to meet good people that are willing to help.

Lived here for 14 years. Never had a problem. You don't get involved in politics. Stay out of shady areas. Like you would in Detroit, Chicago,Los Angeles and other large cities in the U.S. treat people with respect and they will return it. I live 14 miles south of Puerto Vallarta in a small fishing village.

Mexico has long allowed the criminal force to encroach in every facet of Mexican life. The government as we all have read time after time is either cooperating with the criminals and or looking for ways to steal everything they can get their hands on. The mainland of Mexico roads are extreamly dangerous as an effect as is the reason for the drug cartels who are ruining the lives of every person living here. That the government refuses to take action on impunity of those elected officials and pass no serious laws against those stealing gas, holding villages hostage for extortion, let’s not forget that they are killing every candidate for public office that is against them. Mexico is headed to be a nation that lives in fear every day and international investors will stop looking to be part of. It’s very sad to see what could be a great country run into the ground by greedy politicians and criminal gangs.

Been going to and driving on roads since 1999 on a yearly basis I love the country. All trips I towed an RV. Road repairs take time ,just as they do in the United States. The people of Mexico are more friendly to all than the people of the U S. Mexico in a lot of ways is a breath of fresh air. In most cases the bad things you hear about Mexico are from people who have heard something from someone else who has never drove across the boarder and really live among Mexico’s people, other than a resort hotel.
Thank you for letting me put my thoughts out to I hope all.
