Yes — it doesn't matter whether the president and a lawmaker agree or disagree; respect should be given equally.
No — as chief executive, the president has the power (and the right) to determine who gets honored
The true issue is deeper than just lowering the flag and respect. This is just one more instance when our president reveals his inability to put his country above his own interests.
Our president maybe should have kept the flag at half mast longer, but McCain also declined to involve him in his memorial. It all may be disrespectful, but it's also an eye for an eye.
