Do you support a handgun ban in Canada?

People who take the time and spend money to get any gun permit in Canada are the least likely to commit a crime. They give their own privacy as their names are entered into a BIG computer and are checked every day for violations. People with hand guns are further restricted as to where the can take and use them. Gun owners know that to keep a fire are is privilege not a right. A privilege once lost or taken is not likely to be restored.

Well really, you think banning hand guns will solve all problems?

How many more laws do you need?
Enough laws, let the prosecutors do their jobs and let's force them to do their jobs. It's not a matter of liberals or conservatives, there are enough laws on the books!

Let's understand how many laws there are before we come up with more.
Now if you have, firearm OR imitation firearm to commit an offence, attempts to commit an offence, and /or runs away after. This is for every crime OTHER than the NOTE at the bottom.
INIDICTABLE OFFENCE = 14 years ... Even if no one is hurt.

All charges AFTER Fraggle does this, are consecutive to the 14 years.

Careless Use, firearms and / or ammunition = 2 years ( 5 years for 2nd and subsequent offences )

Contravention of storage regulations = 2 years ( 5 years for 2nd and subsequent offences )

    Pointing a firearm = 5 years

Possession for dangerous purpose = 10 years

Carrying while attending a public meeting = 5 years

    Carrying concealed = 5 years

    Unauthorized possession = 5 years

Possession knowing the gun is unauthorized = 10 years

Possession at an unauthorized place = not exceeding 5 years

Unauthorized possession in a motor vehicle = 10 years

*Unlawful Possession of a prohibited / restricted gun, loaded or with ammunition easily accessible = 3 years ( 5 years 2nd or subsequent offence ).

Fraggle breaks into your house, desecrates your gun locker and takes your gun and hands it to Hollander = 10 years Fraggle breaks into a gun store and steals a gun = LIFE
Fraggle sells his guns illegally = 3-10 years and 5-10 for 2nd or subsequent offence
Transfer without authority = not exceeding 5 years

Fraggle tries to convert, or does convert, a gun to automatic = 1-10 years
Fraggle loses his gun or has it stolen or defaces the gun and doesn’t report it in a ‘timely fashion’ = up to 5 years Fraggle decides to destroy his gun and doesn’t report it in a ‘timely fashion’ = up to 5 years
Fraggle loses his gun, or has it stolen, or destroys it and lies about it to the police = up to 5 years
Hollander, having received the stolen gun from Fraggle, removes the serial # = 5 years

All of these, except * (above) are related to non restricted, restricted, prohibited guns AND imitation guns AND ammunition.

NOTE - These are their own beast (criminal negligence causing death), 236 (manslaughter), 239 (attempted murder), 244 (discharging firearm with intent), 244.2 (discharging firearm — recklessness), 272 (sexual assault with a weapon) or 273 (aggravated sexual assault), subsection 279(1) (kidnapping) or section 279.1 (hostage taking), 344 (robbery) or 346 (extortion)

It seems that those that want to ban handguns consider themselves as intelligent . However if this were the case they would also realise simple solutions are for simple folk , a handgun ban is something that seems tangible at first glance , but in reality does little to curb actual crime . The FBI back at a time when mobsters ruled , the ONLY thing that worked was the difficult option , being tougher on actual criminals , not the street level hoodlums so much, but the really nasty lengthy list offenders . So if our government and those that think just doing the "Simple things " will actually have an effect other than create a larger rift in our society , may want to stand back and give it some more thought .

When will virtue-signalling politicians take the tough road and get tough on criminals instead of banning handguns that will do NOTHING from a criminal activity standpoint....

  • Chris - 6 years ago

A handgun ban does not deter criminals, they have many avenues of getting firearms, including smuggling alongside drugs and cash, and now 3d printing. Machine guns and semi automatic handguns are both over 100 year old technology, there is no public safety benefit to banning handguns.

Private security, like those employed by the 1%, would also still carry firearms.

So who is actually affected by a handgun ban? Just the law abiding middle class. The voting public, and the silent majority.

This is not a smart move, just a shortsighted attempt to gain some public support in the urban centers. By the time people realize it did no good, we'll have collectively forgotten whos to blame, and it will be the future government's problem to solve.

Banning guns is a disingenuous maneuver by politicians that are either to afraid to address core issues surrounding crime or to disconnected from reality to know what the actual issues are.

Furthermore the "statistic" that 50% of crime guns are domestically sourced was proven to be a lie. An access to information request filed with the Toronto Police demonstrated that the number was actually closer to 12%. Of that 12%, its almost certain that most were stolen from their legal owners or legal retailers. So have we, as a society, actually taken to blaming the victim of a crime, being a legal owner that had their gun stolen, for the outcome of that crime?

As has been said, several times, criminals obey the law. A criminal committing 10 criminal offences is not going to care that 1 more charge gets added to the information against him when he goes for trial.

We need diversion away from crime, social programs to engage disenchanted youth. We need to stop glorifying the criminal lifestyle. we need to make the consequences and punishment for committing crimes, especially ones committed with guns, so significant that there is a real deterrent or, conversely, the real possibility that the offender never again see the free light of day.

Hey Thomas - fun fact - Mexico has all but outlawed private ownership of firearms. There is only one gun store in the entire country, and that is on a military base and only very strongly vetted civilians are allowed in there.
Now - how safe would you say Mexico is compared to Canada? One has a 'handgun ban' (and everything else) ; and one has a very robust regime of licensing. Where would you feel safest? I know it's Canada for me.
Handguns have been registered in this country since the 1930's yet criminals still get guns from the US and criminals are STILL the only ones who won't be affected by a handgun ban.

  • Toronto Resident - 6 years ago

Thomas, handguns are not designed to kill people. Like all firearms, they are designed to send a bullet down a barrel at a high rate of speed ONLY when activated by a person. In other words, firearms are HARMLESS inanimate objects like any and all other inanimate object some PERSON has used to harm another person.
If firearms scare you, stay away from them. Same goes for cars, golf clubs, hammers, knives and other sharp edged tools. Booze and cigarettes are not good for you and people who consume both tend to end up dead earlier than others.
Finally, all those stats that have been posted lately about surges in firearm related incidents and domestic sources etc, etc, guess what? They're all BS. FOI requests to various agencies proved it.

Civilized societies deserve more rights and privileges, not less.

This is the umpteenth online poll regarding banning guns; strangely enough they all end up being against any bans and are all dropped in the trash bin. The ONLY poll to make the news is the ONE poll from Nanos that came out in favour of a ban; Not very "objective" news coverage is it?

  • Thomas - 6 years ago

Gun has NO place in a Civilized Society. There is only purpose for a hand gun it is to kill. If Canada ban Hand Gun at least law abiding decent Citizens will be free of this menace.

  • jonathan - 6 years ago

Criminals would not respect a handgun ban, that is why they are criminals. I'm not into handguns or any guns for that matter, but a handgun ban just says to me that you don't want to go after criminals.

I’m afraid to comment... I think current regulations are just fine.
