Do you agree with NHRA cutting the 2019 Pro Stock schedule from 24 to 18 races?

Leave pro stock to run a full schedule instead of only a few races. Not everybody can go to only certain tracks because of distance and expense. Maybe NHRA should stop being so greedy and think about the working man. Thanks, John.

The rules have knocked out dodge n ford who wants to watch a race with just one brand I used to love pro stock but I don’t watch it any more

If NHRA wants the attention back in Pro Stock, then go back to carburetors, hood scoops, and more diversity in manufacturers. Now its just Camaro-stock, & dominated by a few. I stopped watching Pro Stock when they went all EFI.
While i'm at it, Pro Mod should do away with all the turbo, fuel injected, nitrous cars & just bring back blown alcohol wild wacky cars of yesteryear. They're all the same now. No different body styles. Its like watching the same two cars over & over & over.
Oh, one more rant, in the nitro class, whoever does not pull over immediately after an engine failure, should be made to pay for the extended clean-up. I realize that that isn't possible in all cases, but c'mon, when your bullet expires and you continue all the way down, its not fair to the fans who pay good money to see racing, not track maintenence! Not to mention the change in the race schedule, and other classes that suffer due to someone being inconsiderate.

While I enjoy the tight competition level in the class, I don't enjoy the fact that 98% of the cars running in it are all Camaros, as Chevy is my least favorite of the major manufacturers. But even if it were Dodge or Ford or Toyota, who wants to see everybody running the same manufacturer? What's always made drag racing at the local level interesting is the huge variety of automobiles people turn into drag racers and bring to the track. NASCAR is getting boring in the same way. When you look at the old footage from the 70s, you had Ford and Mercury, Dodge and Plymouth, Chevy and Pontiac and Oldsmobile and Buick all running out there. Now that was fun. They're down to three manufacturers as well now, it might as well be an IROC race (if anybody remembers those). For everything that auto racing does to help car safety, the manufacturers should be funneling more of their massive profits into putting teams out there.

I’ll be watching and, hopefully, still driving a door car at my local drag strip for as long as they’ll let me. And that makes Pro Stock my favorite professional drag racing class, along with the fact that Pro Stock drivers have the best driving skill as evidenced by performing multi gear burnouts, launching the car with their left foot releasing the clutch, shifting a clutchless five speed transmission at precise rpm and having a sixteen car field separated by .015 seconds in ET. The cars are continuously improving to stay competitive by innovative suspension, weight transfer, traction, clutch materials and mechanisms, data collection, and of course, power. Using the same displacement engines as TF and FC, but naturally aspirated and burning race gas, they’re able to pull over 1450 horsepower from these intensely worked and dyno tested bullets.
TF and FC are more popular at the track because they are louder and faster than PS. But my favorite visual and sound experience at a pro event is still a pair of Pro Stocks leaving the line with .00* reaction times and hearing the symphonic engines rev to 10500 rpm with the front wheels not yet rotating and two inches off the deck, then lightly touching down at the seamless 1-2 shift and slightly starting to spin, the engine harmoniously screaming back to peak rpm. By third gear the front tires lite on the track and come to rotational sync with the 17x35’s, fourth gear, then fifth, chutes are popped and the winner takes the stripe 6” ahead of his opponent and 6.52 seconds is another piece of the memory quilt in my head.
I like drag racing because it’s loud and fast and Mano E Machina and air pollution and conspicuous consumption and I hope Pro Stock keeps a spot on the drag strip if only for match racing. And if internal combustion is outlawed we’ll use electric motors and put really loud speakers on the cars, blasting the sound of a Pro Stock engine for a burnout and a 6.48 with a 1 pass.

Pro mod could possibly replace pro stock. NHRA slow killed pro stock when they went to 500 in engine rules. I think factory stock is more like pro stock should have stayed. Cubic $$$ &tube chassis, in my opinion, started the slow decline of class. As for top fuel &funny car, they are just like NASCAR &IMCA. Take the fancy wrapper off,and what the hell kind of car are they racing anyway?

Pro Stock hasn’t been popular for several decades after Mopar and Ford were no longer competitive. Almost forgot Warren Johnson’s Olds. Current Pro Stock field is a “Spec Series” all the same car. Notice the grandstands are empty during Pro Stock eliminations?! It’s NHRA’s version of NASCAR. Now GM and Ford are going to stop making cars (except Mustang and Camaro), so they won’t be sponsoring anything that doesn’t promote their pickup truck and SUV showroom offerings. Pro Modifiied is where its at. Same with those 8 second Challengers, Camaros, and Mustang. Pro Comp and all electronic controlled cars are boring. We call them “bloggers” they leave the line at maximum RPM then bog down at 60 feet. Thank goodness Torrance won TF hooray for the independent. I DVR all NHRA televised races and fast forward through all the “interviews” (merely the driver reciting their sponsor’s names). If its DSR or JFR cars in the quarter or semi finals, I stop watching. Who cares which team with the most money wins? What’s the point. BTW I’ve been a fan since the 1960’s growing up near Irwindale, Orange County, Lions, and Pomona. The current NHRA (and NASCAR) is all about sponsor corporate dollars using their fan base to attempt to sell us products. And why did the California Highway Patrol sponsor Robert Hyde? Seriously. I think NHRA has a big secret like Monster Trucks. The association owns the entry vehicles. I suspect every time The Greek shows up to fill the TF field with a Lucas sponsorship, its just corporate sponsorship dollars being used to filll the field. Same with the CHP sponsorship. Harley Davidson is an NHRA sponsor to buy into motorcycle racing coverage. It’s all about selling the fans something. Like $35 tee shirts. The grass roots ET racers are extinct now cause who wants to build a 10 second car in their garage only to lose to some guy that bought a Hellcat at the dealership. Last ET race I went to at the local drag strip had a total of 32 cars, and 8 of them wer 13 second BMW’s. I know I sound ancient but the good old days were the great old days.

    Thanks NHRA.
You eliminated Bristol and the 4 Wide at Charlotte. This schedule really sucks. Any driver and fan can tell you that Bristol and Charlotte are two of the more pristine tracks. If NHRA feels by reducing the schedule from 24 to 18 races will get fans excited, guess again. When NHRA made the decision a couple of years back to mandate that Pro Stock go to fuel injection and eliminate hood scoops, did you give thought to the expense of switching over, not to mention teams and drivers having to adjust their driving skills. Would bringing mountain motors into the mix be any more costly to Teams. I know of one PS driver in favor of bringing on the mountain motors. Let the smaller budget Teams make the decision to run or not run a full schedule. Come on NHRA, when you play up Top Fuel and Funny Car by showing complete burn outs and complete rounds, you aren't helping PS cars or bikes. PS is run through so fast, if you blink, you'll miss it. Granted they are probably more DSR and JFR fans than PS, but if NHRA really want to keep PS from being a dying breed, don't cut out 6 races. I'll guarantee those die hard PS fans "ain't gonna take it" and will stop going to the NHRA races. If you really want to keep PS alive, consider mountain motors, or go back to old school PS. If you’ll notice after the Top Fuel and Funny Cars run, a lot of the fans leave their seats. Why? It isn’t that they aren’t interested in PS, it’s due to the TF and FC back at the pits tearing down engines. Fans love to see “action”. Although PS does not typically change out an engine during an actual race, they do pull transmissions, change gears, and check plugs, lifters, etc. NHRA needs to re-think how they can help PS instead of ‘phasing out’ the class which I feel will happen if things don’t change. Think about it. Back in the day, more fans went to races just to see the old school race cars because they could relate, whether or not they had a hot rod they ran on the streets or a local racetrack. NHRA needs to listen to the PS Drivers/Team Owners and Fans.

Prostock cars are much like cookie cutter cars. Need all three American brands involved. No rpm rules! Build it run it!!

  • Lee davis - 5 years ago

This is a big mistake . The problem with pro stock is they run though the first three rounds so fast you can't keep up they won't show burnouts any more . They need the cars to look like cars not a big bubble.this goes for all cars take the stickers off they all look the same .you have to look for the name plate to see what it is.they have things so messed up ever with NASCAR they may never get it back .everybody talks about going forward they might need to look back to there roots .this may not be worth much but I said what i thought

  • Wes Sellers - 5 years ago

Well now I can save money by not going to the Houston spring nationals, and to either Bristol or Topeka because ProStock won't be there. T
op Fuel and Funny Cars are loud and fast, but the roots come from the door slammers, because that what we all recognize. When most race in sportsman it is the door slammer cars, and the Kings of the door slammers is ProStock, but the parity isn't there anymore,
Use to see different manufacturers, even though I am a BowTie guy, I still like the different competition from several Ford, Dodge, and back in the day we had Pontiac and Olds, it gave a flavor to the sport that has gone,

When NHRA killed all Mopar participants with their rpm rules, they made the class onto Pro Camaro, they lost me as a fan, it’s been well over a year and a half since I have watched on tv and 3 yrs since I have been to a race. Management six, they are killing the sport and they are too dumb to see it

  • Matt Payne - 5 years ago

Cutting the amount of races the pro stock cars compete at will not help the problem. In my opinion the death of the pro stock class started with the influx I of team cars. When the class began you had a person you associated with each car, and only that car. They were were built, tuned and driven by that person. Now we have 16 cars and only three engine builders, and four different owners ( don't quote me on the numbers, it's not exact). NHRA needs to reighn in the amount of cars that a team or owners can have, this includes top fuel, funnycar and pro stock bike.

  • Paul Libassi - 5 years ago

This is going to hurt the sport and NHRA. Fans in the northeast like myself have already had a major blow to them by now needing to drive to Epping or Maple Grove Pennsylvania to see a National event and now they are removing pro stock from epping. Poor business decision and they are causing their own demise in a sport that has for decades already taken a backseat to Nascar. Pro stock was the class that the working class racers could relate to most and enjoy and it is a huge mistake to phase it out. Removing tunnel rams and carburetors made the cars ugily and boring as well. Just my opinion.

Don't cut Pro Stock racing. Wrong move. Still popular

  • Straight Line “racing” sucks - 5 years ago

Oh no, now all 42 rabid pro “stock” fans are going to be upset about not being able to go somewhere called Epping. Pro “stock” is irrelevant in this day and age. All the slack jaws want to see are the big boys so they can brag about how their rusty, broke down ‘92 Dodge Ram “gots a hemi innit jus’ like dem boys makin’ den 4 second passes, yer haw!!11!!!”
Real racing has corners, left turns & right turns. All drag “racing” is is a top speed contest, not a race.

Nitro classes are exciting and always will be, but pro stock relates more to the average fan. I find their attraction equal to the nitro if not more. My family and I have attended races in the New England, Penn, and New Jersey area for many years, although we live closest to Epping. I highly doubt that NHRA will lower ticket prices to Epping after eliminating Pro Stock. NHRA seems to change things every year and call them benificial to the drivers or fans. B.S. NHRA has appeared to have lost it''s focus as an organization for the good of the fans and drivers and become just a greedy self-serving cash cow. If Pro Stock is gone from Epping without lowering ticket prices or replacing some added value then my family will find another form of recreation to spend our money on. I realize that as a family of four our dollars will not be missed, and NHRA does not need us. Conversely, we do not need NHRA either.

I don’t mind cutting back on pro stock it’s a little lack luster I’m only speaking from a spectators view I think nitro bikes should be taking there place but another issue I have is the times they are running the races it keeps getting earlier and earlier which is starting to make it fell like work and not fun and entertainment and I believe I’m starting to see more empty seats because they are just running them to early 12:00 now a days and sitting in the sun at those times the last thing you want to see is a bunch of pro stock cars is it about the fans still or are you just trying to get them over with so you can make it home for dinner come on man up

  • Billy Lawrence - 5 years ago

It should go back a few years like when pro stock was affordable now they call it Top Sportsman. If you get those cars and others run carbs you can have a too many cars like when the Johnsons Glidden and so many more ran with low sponsors and made the fans roar do you see that now no. Or there are a lot of mountain motor pro stock cars looking a place to run to have 30 pro mods trying to get in a 16 car field make pro work with them just on power only. Fuel injection sucks carbs is racing TOP FUEL AND FUNNY CAR are running about the same as always blowers and same basic engine.

  • Leslie - 5 years ago

Pro stock lost its luster for me when it became an all GM race. If I want to see nothing but Chevy’s I’ll go to super Chevy and be done with it. When ford and mopar pulled out is when it was over. TF and FC are fun to watch and have the illusion of different manufacturers but we all know when you take the body off they all run the same stuff. That said, I’m still going to make a race or two.

  • Jim - 5 years ago

Factory stock is where it's at. Pro mods are really fun. Kind of like the old AA/FA cars. The sport is always evolving, this is just one more step. Besides, the NHRA needs to do something to get butts back in the stands.

  • Technosnarf - 5 years ago

Killing off Prostock (which will be the ultimate outcome of this action) will only hurt all of NHRA and accelerate the shrinking of the already sparse fan base. If NHRA really wants to help itself it should bring the prise purses up from the (current) 1970's level payouts! Most amateur sports have larger payouts. NHRA needs to share much more with the stars of the sport. If it doesn't they are going to take the hint and start saving money by not taking part in any events.
