Would limiting access to handguns and assault weapons have a significant impact on gun violence in Canada?

Gun laws do not stop shooting and crime perpetrated with guns. Just like murder laws don't stop murder. Criminals don't pay attention to or obey laws, it is currently illegal to possess a gun or ammunition without the proper licensing, criminals don't listen now, why would they because we add more laws.
Solution to the issue is more resources for dealing with gangs, criminals, and illegal smuggling of firearms into Canada.
People getting injured and killed by vehicles won't decrease if we make more restrictive laws. Why? Because it is the drivers that cause accidents. Stiffer fines and punishment for drunk driving haven't solved that issue. Inanimate objects don't cause injury and death, the users of them do when they are poorly trained, not paying attention, not following the laws, or have malicious intent.

Assault weapons have been banned in Canada for many, many years.

if a criminal wants access to fire arms, they will go about it without going the legal way...And will find a way to do so..Making the laws tighter is not going to stop them..

Restricting more access to ANY firearms ONLY benefits A TREASONIST GOVERNMENT.....PERIOD !!!!

Terrance. The study constantly used to suggest more guns equals more violence has been debunked. It was flawed. It didn't break out those who illegally possessed guns from the honest. In the majority of cases the violence, say in homes with guns, was in the homes of those who illegally possessed illegal guns. And the violence wasn't from those guns. It was from guns brought in to those homes by criminal assailants.
We used to call it ripping off a grow op or a drug deal gone bad.
Studies comparing guns to population actually find a proportional decline in gun violence and death as gun ownership rises.
Research it yourself if you care.
The focus needs to be on factors that trigger violence - bad Liberal govt policies that cause economic hardship, youth dystopian culture etc etc.
And, anyways, the most common way Canadians are murdered continues to be by beating. With fists, hammers etc. Not guns.
Don't fixate on the tool. Go work on the root causes and actually make a difference.

When will Government stop politicizing and focus on the real issue, Criminals and Gangs. Public safety is at risk here, and the Liberals are proposing to waste more tax money without targeting the problem. They are also are proposing shortening criminal sentences, effectively putting dangerous criminal back on the street,

They are already hard to get!! You need to pass tests..courses..background checks etc etc and wait 6+ months to get them.

Politicians can implement weapon bans all they want. And the people who obey the laws will probably obey the new restrictive law. It's political low-hanging fruit. But the bottom line is that criminals won't obey the law because that's what a criminal is - a person who DOES NOT obey the law.

Until politicians address root cause of why people commit violent acts - (mostly due to mental illness, poverty, addiction, etc) violent crime won't go away if you simply eliminate one of the methods for violence. DEAL WITH THE UNDERLYING ISSUES and you will reduce violence. Otherwise in 25 years we will be asking people to turn in their favorite turkey carving knives - just like they're doing in the UK right now.

Every study in the world shows that there is a direct correlation between the number of guns in civilian hands to gun violence. This has been studied in many countries, including the USA and every study has come to the same conclusion. Less guns in civilian hands means less gun violence on a per capita basis.

Would limiting access to alcohol stop the deaths from drunk drivers? It is the same thing ,

The Liberals-Justin have an agenda, cater to cities and their populations' that vote Liberal. I don't have or need a firearm so ban them. Globalization he signs every treaty on anything the UN dreams up.

Canada, like Japan has laws, training, and background checks to legally own Firearms. However the penalty for getting caught with an illegal obtained/using a firearm in Japan is likely going to land you 10+ years or life in Prison. In Canada it will likely be a fine or suspended sentence under the new Liberal Bill C-75. CPC's passed a 5 year minimum sentence for gun crime, but supreme court judges struck it down.
“The 6-3 ruling, penned by Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin, said the statute was unconstitutional as it upheld a 2013 Ontario Court of Appeal ruling that labelled the law cruel and unusual.”

Japan has the lowest gun crime in the world.

This is just silly. It's already illegal to own or possess a firearm in Canada without a proper license. Pistol ownership and restricted rifle ownership is ridiculously over policed ( criminal search ever day by RCMP) and use of such firearms is restricted to range use only. If I wish to transport my restricted firearms I need special permission from the CFO in the province or provences I wish to transport through.

Canadians need to be educated on the current laws, criminals already are banned from owning firearms and the people that donown forearms legally are the most vetted in Canada. Adding more laws will not affect the criminals that already don’t follow our strict laws

Laws limiting access already exist as explained by the previous posts. What are they going to do, put gun owners on double secret probation?

  • Chance - 5 years ago

Firearm purchases in Canada are restricted to those that have undergone training and hold the appropriate liscencing. This fact seemed to escape our Prime Minister but yes access to legal firearms and handguns is already highly limited. Everyone that legally owns a handgun in Canada has a daily background check. Adding additional laws is going to have no impact on the criminals that aren't following existing laws. Enforce existing laws and punish criminals.

Here we go again. First of all, access to handguns is already severely limited in Canada. One must take two safety courses, pass two tests, apply for a licence (which includes a detailed background check, references, and consent from your "conjugal partner"), wait several months, select a firearm, apply for the registry transfer, have another permit to transport the firearm from the store to your home, and store the firearm according to the regulations set out in the Firearms Act. You can only use the firearm at approved range, and you need an authorization to transport it there. I'm not sure how access could be restricted any further, besides requiring a note from one's mother and a full size car licence plate be affixed to the gun at all times.

As for "assault weapons", this was a term coined by the media back in the 90's to describe any "scary looking" firearm. "Assault rifles", which actually do have a definition (reduced length, intermediate cartridge, capable of FULLY AUTOMATIC FIRE), are already prohibited in Canada. The latest term is "Assault-style rifle", which I assume is something that bears a passing cosmetic resemblance to an assault rifle, but actually isn't. I'm not sure what the point is of restricting something based on appearance, rather than function. Already, actions are limited to semi-automatic, magazine capacity is limited to five rounds, and barrel length must be at least 18 inches, and a licence is required to possess (course, test, background, references, conjugal partner's consent).

Firearms access is already limited in canada. You must obtain a license to acquire firearms legally. Possession without license is illegal. Gangs are not licensed owners
