How would you grade the Cardinals' offseason?

Sorry for some of the grammatical errors in my rant.

Let me start by saying I am a die-hard Cardinals fan and have been since 1967. I live and die each year with Cardinal baseball and it is in my blood.

That being said, the organization doesn't seem to understand that is has not had a franchise player since Albert was in town (sorry Matt Holiday...just the facts). Starting with the pitching, and I love this guy in a Cardinal uniform, Wainwright should have retired. You can't just live on curve balls and hitters know that. Kimbrel was exactly what the bullpen needed and we passed on that. reyes and Martinez are turning out to be a bust, which is a real shame since I, as well as many Cardinal fans believed they would be to voice of our pitching staff of the future.

Outfield is another sore spot. A plethora of bodies and no consistency. Martinez is an American League player as long as the National League dismisses the DH. Fowler was a mistake to keep (personally, I think the Cubs and Fowler planned the sabotage but just my opinion). I'm not sure Harper was an answer as his stats were slightly average but his presence makes other teams take notice and he excites the fan base.

Infield appears to be a lot more stable. Wong is having a great start. Gyorko is better off as a bench player. I would have traded him off for a Machado, who could have and would have been the Cardinals next Franchise player. A better fit for that honor, in my humble opinion, than Harper. And there is Matt Carpenter. Sorry Matt, but I believe it is time to part ways. A lead off hitter cannot continue to lead off with a batting average that literally sucks. (Yes, he rebounded last year into a potential MVP candidate but his poor performance helped that Cardinals start in a whole from which they just couldn't recover). Goldschmidt was a great acquisition but this team, and Cardinal Nation, deserved so much more.

Now the real problem lies with the front office and can be summed up with the following...spending. DeWallet (I like that) and Mo (spend less) refuse to part with the cash to fill obvious needs, instead relying on players brought up through the farm system. Not that it doesn't work, otherwise why have a farm system. But the fact is, Cardinal fans deserve better than missing the playoffs 3 consecutive years. We sign a huge deal with Fox sports which could support a couple of big salary players but they refuse to spend. Other clubs spend and they continue to produce playoff worthy teams.

St Louis fans pay a lot to see a quality team on the field every night. You can't piece-meal a playoff team and expect to make the playoffs and the past three years have shown this to be true. It is time for Bill and Mo to "Fork Up The Money" and build us a historic franchise worthy playoff team. Otherwise, we will continue to rely on just hockey and fall ball to fulfill our October needs.

Agree with this opinion...Harper would look far better in RF than any of the other candidates; and Kimbrel would (still) be a nice asset to have closing out games, moving Hicks/Miller to a set up role. Just eat the Fowler and Cecil contracts, Mo. Then again, it's not my money. I just buy tickets and swag, as I have been for 40+ years. And of course, DeWallet understands that.
