This is a BURNING QUESTION. I have no answer.

Dog Pile means PEOPLE jumping on top of each other not dogs or other animals (and I'm a humorless prick)

It would be a cat pile.

Mermaids can't just on top of each other because the top ones would float to the top.

Many animals sleep in piles. For example pigs will sleep in piles. Thus the term Pig Pile.
