Why left atrium doesn't hypertrophy in mitral stenosis?
The left atrium is not programmed for hypertrophy. Myosin and actin are different in the atria than LV. LA can respond only with dilatation even with pressure overload.
LA, do hypertrophy from its baseline thickness of .5 to 4mm. It is so subtle, it can't be picked in routine Echo
The rheumatic fibrotic process in the atrial interstitium prevents true LAH.
The mean LA pressure-volume loop is never sustainably high enough to trigger LAH.
If LA mass is taken as the definition of LAH (as in LVH ) we can still say LA hypertrophy exists.
