I think I've got a solution, however, and wonder if you could add it to your list of possible solutions: My router is n capable but running in b/g mode beacuse of older kit I have. Move it over to be just n and it all works fine. No drops and no packet loss in the ping utility. Shame I've got things like a printer, my iPAQ and an old G5 which can't handle n!!
