My first year of really participating in horse racing was 2004 and I was really hoping for Smarty Jones to win because I had followed the Triple Crown so closely. This race shows why it's so difficult to win the Triple Crown when horses that lose in the Kentucky Derby can pass the Preakness, have five weeks off and try to knock off the Triple Crown contender who has run just three weeks before. I don't remember if Birdstone ever won anything of importance after the Belmont.

A few tough choices, Spectacular Bid's pin, for those who go that far back was memorable because he was SO good. Ron B must remember Affirmed -Alydar was 1978, this poll started in 1979. Real Quiet & Smarty Jones just missing the Triple Crown are very big. R to R winning is nice but we must have a lot of female voters there. The authors choice of Point Given was mine because I also loved that horse from the beginning and his performance that day was awesome!

Who ever put together the choices must have forgotten Affirmed and Aladar who put on several great performances against each other.
