When should driving under the influence be treated as a felony in Montana?

I'm strongly opposed to Drinking and Driving but even the first time offender of driving and drinking needs to be sentenced to mandatory treatment for "alcoholism" which is the disease. Putting people in jail because they are sick is not the answer. Making them go to treatment with longer and stronger treatment plans is one answer, taking away their license, and taking away their car.... a must if they continue to drive. I'm just wondering what will happen when more and more cell phone drivers cause more and more accidents.

Claire, while I couldn't disagree with you more, at least you state what most prohibitionists won't, that they don't think people should drink. I'm sure you have done things in your life I would never do but I certainly don't think I have any right to tell you you can't, or try to pass laws to prevent you from living your life. Cars are very dangerous and kill a lot more people than many things, but nobody is trying to ban them. I wonder why?

In the U.S., between 13,000 and 20,00 innocent people are killed every year by drunk drivers. This is not OK with me, and I work constantly to stiffen the penalties and lower these numbers. I'm not even counting those injuries which negatively affect people for a lifetime.

Every one of these fatalities, mothers, fathers, babies, etc., is a preventable death. Think about it.

It does no good to say "don't drink and drive'. Every single drunk I've known in my 70 years swears (when they'r sober) that they'd never drive while drinking.

Yet, when they're drunk, it's "I'm fine to drive".

The mantra needs to be - Don't Drink.

There is nothing good to come from the use of alcohol, and a multitude of bad results which always shatter the lives of family and friends.
