I give it the first-line test

I see if the dust-jacket synopsis interests me

I rely upon recommendations

I don't read anything Oprah hasn't told me to

In the pictures-to-words ratio, pictures must come out ahead

It's really the first three combined. Also sometimes reading a section in the middle will help prevent first-line dazzlement. Also, I just came across this (via Sociological Images) the other day:
