Should he have done it? No. Absolutely not. Should he have been disciplined for his inappropriate actions (as defined by corporate policy)? Yes. Absolutely. The policy is in place to protect the employees from their own heroics. Should he have been fired? No. Definitely not.
Shopko was 100% wrong to fire this man, especially not right as winter hits and he has himself and a family to feed, a home to maintain, etc. Sure, he was able to find a new job, but that's hardly a given in today's economy.
