Yes. An engagement is about the guy dedicating his love to you, so let him be the man and determine "how much" love he wants to give.
It depends on the circumstances. If your intended seems open to the possibility of you shopping together for a ring then sure. Otherwise you may risk losing the most part, the engagement itself.
