The Ceremonies where okay, The national Anthem should never have been tampered with. I don't want to go On I may begin to souns like TAM a "hater". I have better things to do, getting back to where it really counts"THE GAMES" Lets talk about the Protester. Now those are some Canadains, Jerks.

BRILLIANT!! I felt my "glowing heart" and the spirit of the "true north strong and free."

    but...

Disappointed with the Canadian Anthem, was not recognizable. Don't remake our anthem to be something new and jazzy
Too bad Mark Donnelly wasn't there...

Loved the choice of flag bearers and the final torch lighters Bravo

$40million for last night's opening ceremony. Was it worth it? Not $40mil.

I'm all for the native indians, but I thought Canada was more about multiculturalism now than ever. It was over done and more ethnic groups should have been represented.

Talk about the glitch on the 4th arm not coming up! What a dissapointment.

And to have Gretsky be on the truck in the pouring rain to light the cauldron...it was pouring rain!! And did anyone notice that the truck's left side headlight was blown as well? Very nice representation of Vancouver, Vanoc. Thanks for the years of work so the world can see how boring and lame we are.

There were ofcourse positive highlights, but those moments were slight.

Totally disappointed with the Opening Ceremonies, I would have loved to have sung the National Anthem like we do for our hockey games. Too much emphasis on the First Nations, yes let's honor them but we have many cultures here in Vancouver and we don"t all speak French!!!! The Olympics are not being held in Quebec. I was very disappointed by the french first and then english. Why did we not have tons of stuff from BC to showcase the world what we have to offer. Where were the mascots, would have loved to have seen something on Terry Fox, heard Anne Murray sing where was Celine Dion. Loved the special effects of the whales and the spirit bear but other than that too long.

In my mind it was the 'Disney' version of Canadian stereotypes. Perhaps the overdone First nations component was some kind of reparation. I know of no
First Nations Olympians so why the huge tribal dancing and drumming that seemed endless. The historical land issues should have been acknowledged but to dominate 3/4 of the program seemed wrong and disproportionate to the actual place First Nations peoples hold in Canada in 2010. Canada is nothing if not multicultural.

We Canadians are not Just First Nations Peoples. I'm with Karen,There is not just one 'face' of Canada. I would have loved to have seem the first Nations presence morph into the multicultural Canada of 2010.(Sikhs, Asian,Eastern European,Greek,African, etc.)
And more young people. Come on Donald Sutherland, please. Anne Murray?I don't get the choices made. Canadians were really under-represented. K.D.Lang hasn't lived in Canada for years. She is not exactly at the top of outstanding Canadians list. Lang was some sort of politically correct statement. Her inclusion was disappointing.
Hallelujah is a good song written by a Canadian but it has nothing about Canadians or Canada in it.It is not even sports related . Why not something by Jonie Mitchell or Gordon LightFoot ?) Loved the inclusion of Gerou, the French singer. The visuals and the music were perfectly produced.

Loved the poet...very entertaining. Hated the hatchet job done on the Fiddling tradition of Canadian.(The costumed fiddlers looked like refugee street kids.)Not very attractive nor authentic. The flying boy theme carried on far too long.Love W.O.Mitchell but it wasn't represented well. The Ice Totems were somewhat phallic looking. No? Kind of cheap looking,(ala' Ice Capades).

The idea of a young jazz singer butchering OH,CANADA was an ill-conceived notion on some moron's part. Our Anthem should always be sung by a choir and sung in a standardized arrangement allowing for Canadians to sing along.ALWAYS! Our multicultural makeup requires inclusion
and singing the Anthem is the most accessible way .

The lighting of the indoor cauldron seemed too contrived and unnecessarily
detail ridden. Too many moving parts (the faulty Totem rising).
The torch carriers struck the right note. The Gretzky run through the rain in Vancouver seemed to be devoid of any production values. They should have put him in a boat to land waterside to light the exterior cauldron(just my opinion:)

Especially liked the respectful treatment of the Georgian Athletes and the moment of silence for the Luger that lost his life in the Sliding Centre.

Really hated the part where the CEO for VANOC went on and on about the bravery, courage and merit of the athletes. Sorry it's just sports. A very selfish endeavor when examined closely. Individual glory is the motivation for the majority of participants. Not exactly a selfless walk of life.

That's all I managed to see. I am so glad this whole thing will be over soon. the last three years have been hell having this stuffed down our throats at every turn. CTV has been especially sickening.

Other than than that I love the Olympics :P

  • Bonnie - 14 years ago

Would have been better with more music that appeals to the age demographic of the athletes. The operatic singer is more suitable to a eastern audience, and a much older audience. Loved Brian Adams/Nelly Fertado' opening number along with Sarah Maclaughlin & Anne Murray.

I think VANOC and everyone involved with the production of the opening ceremonies owe Canadians an apology for not having our national anthem performed. Yes, someone did sing a song that contained the lyrics to Oh Canada but changing the melody made it a song - NOT our anthem.
Oh yeah, I forgot it wasn't a "live" performance (but sho can blame the producers for that - acoustics in BC Place suck). After the rehearsal comments - they had time to realize their mistke and change it to Canada's national anthem.
Can't wait to hear the anthem played when Canada wins a gold

"O Canada" What the heck was that? VANOC screwed that up big time!!!!!Well done First Nations People in welcoming the world to the Olympics, Salt Lake did a great job of regonizing the First People in 2002. The opening Cereomies Great job displaying Canada from the East Coast , to the Prairies and to the West Coast. It was great to see well knowen figures carring the Olympic flag.. and those chosen to bring the torch in to the Cereomonies.

I most definitely agree with the comments of Laurie Nickel....All the "Native" hoopla was ridiculous. It is no wonder that the entire world still think of us as uneducated, foraging for our food in the snow covered forests and living in tents and igloos. VERY POOR opening unless you were a native and loved our National Anthem being destroyed. Where was "Vancouver" and our "Capital City" We certainly "heard" the East Coast. Then finally after the long hours came the lighting of the cauldron. After waiting for the always breathtaking lighting of the cauldron in all other Olympics and waiting with excitement to see who was going to bring in the torch, we found multiple people with not only a malfunction but a long ridiculous ride in the rain lighting and relighting the Olympic Torch!!
They had said we should not to try and compare this to Bejing....Of course most people understand that but shouldn't it at least be compared to an "Olympic Opening"
Sadley and once again we missed an opportunity to show "all" of Canada to the world.
KD Lang was the greatest part of the whole opening. She was fantastic!!!!

Glad someone else brought up the french first aspect--it really put the hairs on my neck up--Canada has two official languages and in BC it is English---we give in enough to the Quebecers as it is. Also the performance was awesome a job well done but I hope at the closing ceremonies we proud Canadians can sing along to Oh Canada as the anthem we know!

  • kenny - 14 years ago

    Dana G....Has got it right.!
After 40 million $'s you think these people could come up with technoligy SO THEY DONT HAVE TO LIP SINC
    Come on people!
I did apperciate it as a whole and good for canada to keep it Simple yet exciting

  • Shirlee - 14 years ago

Loved it. I was very pleased that the heritage of our aboriginal people was honoured. The dancers showed their pride in their ancestry and great stamina!

  • Ken - 14 years ago

How Rude of the Native Chiefs to be late to the event. With "Head of State" status, you would expect they could have at least made the effort to be seated on time. With such a large emphasis of first nations content, and performances, it was disrespectful to us all. No excuse as they all have V.I.P. access and clearance. Opera singer was too much. The glitch in the lighting of the cauldron was unfortunate. It's fine to acknowledge the first nations but to have the whole thing focused on them was also too much. What about the rest of the "melting pot" we call Canada. The world must assume Canadians consist mostly of first nations people, french people and fiddlers. Overall, I thought it was painfully boring.

  • Marty - 14 years ago

I felt it was well thought through and alot of work was put into it. I have to say though I was disapointed in the fiddling section. The wardrobe was a disaster, I felt more class could have been put in to that. Dressed in black leather, tatoos and spiked hair, black eye liner. I felt they did not represent East coast well, they looked more of a cross of Bikers/ Goth/ Punk Rockers. The Music , and dance though was Fabulous as long as you didn''t see there wardrobe. The ending sadly one piler did not rise, but still the show went on and it was great!!

We were watching from Arizona and were very proud to be Canadians! but we all do wish we could have sung along with our national anthem, the way we know it, what were at they thinking? Kd Lang was fantastic and the rest of the entertainment. I do have one question where were the Olympic mascots? Did We miss their apperance in the ceremonies? Also I know french is our second language but I feel it should have been after our first language English!!! On the whole well done Vancouver!

  • Lloyd & Mavis Creech - 14 years ago

We thought the opening ceremonies were amazing. A job very well done except that we also didn't like the rendition of Oh Canada. It sounded the way the Americans sometimes murder their national anthem. It was absolutely awful. Also, why do the on-site announcers have to give us French instead of English first. After all, English is our OFFICIAL language. We also agree with the comment about Wayne Gretzky's apparent lack of enthusiasm. He looked bored to tears. Oh well, it was raining. Welcome to Vancouver.

  • Hennie - 14 years ago

Sure glad I didn't have to pay for it! Why would you change a National Anthem? Where was the Canadian Idol?? Anne Murrey was even in the house, wow she would of been great!! Would of been alot better then the
opera singer......could not understand a word she sang.....so whats the point.
Watching the athletes come into the stadium was great and inspiring!

  • Dana Mackey - 14 years ago

I think Vancouver did a really good job of the opening ceremonies. I didnt find it difficult at all to sit through the entire 3.5 hours. It never dragged or got boring. The entertainers they chose did a very good job and were appripriate to the city. I loved Brian and Nelly opening, but think that K.D. Lang was the really amazing performance. It was a beautiful and creative display and its just too bad the final torch did not come up. We enjoyed it!!

  • Donna - 14 years ago

I did not like our Canadian National Anthem. Would have much rather heard it sung in its traditional way so that the audience could join in. I did not think it sounded very patriotic and did not give me goosebumps like it usually does! No fault of the singer though. She was instructed as to how it was to be sung. She had a wonderful voice.

  • Ginny - 14 years ago

I was soooo disappointed at our O Canada. What happened? At a time for the whole world to hear us sing, The Version was awful. Who allowed that? With all the money our governments have put into the games. It should of been sung write. All in all I don't think it really represented Canada. Booo

  • joan r - 14 years ago

I loved it, was glued to the TV, however, I have to agree the version of our national anthem was horrible - guess I am not alone, otherwise, well done bc... canada! quite impressive... mike or no mike, Bryan Adams was great! and, KD Lang topped the show!.

  • Karen - 14 years ago

Laurie.....thank you! Soooo glad I'm not the only one who thought the mark was missed with our vast cultural melting pot and too much focus on the First Nations!

    THANK YOU!!!!!!

  • Margaret Maibauer - 14 years ago

Absolutly saddened by the National Anthem. What happened to Canadian pride? Was also dissapointed by the song and dance. It was not inspiring at all. I was having a hard time staying awake. The camera work was not very good either. They did not stay on any one thing long enough to get a good look at what was happening. Like the hoop dancers. This was for the millions that watched on TV. One final comment what was up with the indoor cladron. That was the icing on the cake and it was not very sweet.

  • Donna - 14 years ago

Overall, I thought the whole 2010 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony was awesome! Unfortunate that there was a problem with the hydraulics at the very end, but nevertheless, everyone handled it like pros! The lighting and the performers were absolutely fabulous, and our Canadian athletes made me proud to be a Canadian! The athletes from all other countries also looked wonderful. Congratulations everyone for a job well done!

  • Disapointed Viewer - 14 years ago

I was disappointed in how our Canadian Anthem was done. Also dislike JD Lang would have been the last person I expected to see there. They had the chance of using someone really worthy of the honor.

Did like the other performers and torch carriers. These are people that were at other games and won big for our country they really deserved the honor.

Good luck to all our athletes.

  • Karen - 14 years ago

It was alright. I understand that Canada's heritage is the First Nations but my family has helped to pioneer much of BC (Sikh's) and I think that with all the references made about the Vancouver being the first venue to have such a large multicultural base, well, then they should've focused on that during the ceremonies, as well.....and what was up with all the fiddlers and celtic dancers?? Where in my Canadian history classes did I miss that?

I agree about the national anthem........she has a great voice but why did they butcher it? Who allowed that to happen? And did anyone catch the lip-syncing faux pas by Bryan Adams?? Forgot to bring the mic to his mouth when his part in the song "Bang Your Drums" was already about 5 words in. Can we say Beijing and the 5 yr old girl??

  • Laurie Nickel - 14 years ago

Native input was too overdone! They are a very small percentage of our population and the should NOT represent us to the world. There isn't any olympians of native heritage even competing in the games. I agree that they should be acknowledged and respected but having them dance around and beat their drums for a long period of time was boring and quite embarrassing. Also...the anthem was awful! We love to sing along with our Canadian anthem. we are proud Canadians and that rendition of our song was terrible. Why a jazz singer?!! Ever been to a Canucks game when we all sing the anthem? It's so uplifting.

  • Cheryl Leask - 14 years ago

I agree with Kim the rearrangement of "Oh Canada " though sung well was not the version we all know and love what were the thinking!!,it should have been left as is so we too could sing along.

  • Mark Wade - 14 years ago

Absolutly destroyed our national anthem! I am disgusted and disapointed that we would allow someone to wreck it as was done last night.

  • Kevin - 14 years ago

Ceremony good but the Americanized version of our national anthem sucked-!!

  • Peter - 14 years ago

KD Lang gave the best performance of the night. The whole show was great except for the national anthem and the opera singer. What they did for the lighting of the Olympic flame was truly inspired and real Canadian response.

  • Virginia Bell - 14 years ago

I loved it all BUT...I really think Wayne Gretzky could have shown a little enthusiasm. His part was disappointing. k.d.lang on the other hand was truly amazing! Well done Vancouver!

  • Kim - 14 years ago

Loved the Ceremony but was not really impressed by that version of Oh Canada. I feel it would have been more powerful if people/Canadians would have been able to sing along :)
