Tried rooting with sholes mod. It was a very easy process. But I unrooted shortly after because there were some visable flaws in the theme and the MT browser was unresponsive. I'm pretty picky about my UI and custom roms don't do it for me. Now that TAT home is very appealing. But that's another article all together : -)

Please help an old guy out. What the heck does rooted mean with my Droid?

I was in the process of rooting my phone, but I changed my mind. I actually rooted it, and then unrooted it right away. I'm somewhat of a perfectionist when it comes to my phone, so I didn't want to deal with all the bugs I read about. Instead I installed all the ported apps from 2.1 . I REALLY love the launchers, but both versions run too slow and cause mild freezes on my phone. I move to fast, and it was frustrating, so I uninstalled them. I'm extremly happy with the flan gallery, 2.1 music, and the weather/news program. I kept them, added the dolphin browser with pinch to zoom/multi touch, and I must say that this is a big change from the regular 2.01. Its good enough to hold me over till the ota update. Only reason I really wanted it was to see what the launcher looks like and the possibility of it running flash. I can wait for that, no biggie

Didn't root... was afraid to brick the phone. Also, did not want to be in a position to not have the OTA updates and then have to do everything manually. Interested in rooting for the heck of it and to be on cutting edge so long as it wasn't more trouble than it was worth.

I was rooted with the sholesmod updater it was very easy to root and unroot. Honestly when I was rooted I missed GDE with 7 screens(rooted only had 5 screens from 3) and the cube effect, the 3d application doc was cool but oh well, I have the ported flan gallery back on 2.0.1 smoke glass was cool I liked the black notification bar and the pull down smoked window. I use the Ipack icons and when rooted I wasn't able to use them, that sucked. Maybe when I learn more about how to use root I might change my mind but right now I like the non rooted options more.

What's the big deal of having it rooted in the first place??
