Should NHL players receive a bonus for their performance in the Olympics?

Why? The honour of being chosen to play for your country should be enough. It's not like they actually 'lose' any money by playing in the Olympics with all their expenses being paid along with numerous other perks. Isn't the taxpayer of this country paying enough for this event?

I agree with Alison . . . the question which was presented by Steve Darling included the phrase "funded by taxpayers," immediately following the segment where a member of the COC confirms these bonuses are NOT funded by taxpayers. I think you should present this one again. And, yes, these players deserve the same as all athletes who performed at the olympices. The odds are that they will donate every cent of their bonus to a worthy cause.

Also, I'm a little confused about the COC's statement of bonuses not funded by taxpayers money? Umm... where did they get their funding from to begin with? Do they survive on legacies? I'm also a little confused about their status. Where do they get their funding, to begin with? It seems like smoke and mirrors with this issue.

I don't think professional sports athletes should be allowed to participate in the olympics. The bonus should be to help athletes train and travel to the competitions

little confusing... your question on the broadcast was should the NHL players on the Olympic team receive bonuses funded by taxpayers. Your interview with the representative from the COC confirmed that these monies were not funded by Canadian taxpayers. At any rate my opinion ... I think they should receive the bonus and as conscientious athletes they should collectively "pay it forward" how about into the "Own The Podium" program tp help more Canadian athletes?

i do not think any athlete should receive a bonus for winning a medal this is suppose to be done for the pride of your country not money, it should be banned from all countries and yes the bonuses from hockey players should be donated to charity they make good money.

I seldom reply to these types of opinion polls .......... because they are, too, black or white type of choice. Today I held my nose to vote for. Even if I feel that the Olympic games are an overhyped drain on taxpayers resource, by the host countries. It is an irony that a previous, exclusively amateur, event was usurped by politics and big business. It seems to me that paying for the metal winners is wrong, to start. But, because it is in place? Then all should receive their reward. No distinction. It is inappropriate that any tax-payers money should have been used for this type of event in the first place. Was it Nero who first figured out that, if you give the masses this diversion; then all types of individual freedoms can be eroded quite easily?

No, these hockey players make enough money and after they won the gold medal that all Canada supported them through the games they could not spare 15 minutes to walk across and be part of the Closing Ceremonies.

Don;t give me the speal that they had to catch a plane, there were reports that some of the players were having a private party. Come on, give their bonus to some group like what Canadian Tire is supporting.

Their bonus would only end up spent on something frivoulous.

Yes! They were playing for our country, not a corporate team. What they do with their bonus may surprise us. Some of the olympic medal winners hav already announced what deserving organization they will donate their bonuses to. These players participation in the games benefits all of us in some way.

I personally do not agree with these over payed NHL players needing to be payed a bonus. I also do not feel that professional sports athletes should be allowed to participate in the olympics.

I think that as all medal winners are to receive the bonuses then the hockey players are absolutely entitled to the same consideration. The decision for them to donate the money to a charity, however admirable it be, is theirs to make!

The hockey players earned their gold medals just the same as the rest of the athletes they should receive the bonus as well. It would be wonderful if they donated it to their favourite charity but I don't feel they should have to do that.

Why not word the question properly........like........in light of the fact that all Olympic athletes get a bonus for winning a medal, should the NHL players have theirs taken away?

  • William Angus - 14 years ago

Yes, I believe they deserve that bonus, without them we wouldn't have that 14 Gold Medal record

this is unbelievable. They already make more money than any of us will see in a life time and now they get more? I lost so much work over the olympics and lost money as a result.
