Any punishment must be looked up as a detterrent.Severity of the punishment is proportional to the crime committed. In a country where terrorism, crime, hooch tragedies and other acts which result in killing of innocents, death penalty must sserve as the biggest detterrent. For it have its desired effect it has to be quick and not coloured by political hues. Every civilised country today has come through this process sometime in the past. India is still somewhere down there as far as law and order is concerned. I would even recommend death penalty for politicians convicted of embezzling money meant for the poor and the downtrodden.

Death for Kasab can only be justified if the argument is "We don't want a plane hijacked to let him go as ransom"

But for everyone else, death penalty shows how little we've grown.
