You're absolutely right, Pamela. My experience with Photoshop is very limited, but I played around with the original image a little bit more, and I got the words to pop using some more drastic shadowing. I'll pitch it to Em and Ben, see what they think.

I think the fact that the three of you can't agree is a good indication that you need to go back to the drawing board and play a little bit more before changing your header. My personal response to the images is that I am more fond of the ones that include color rather than only grey-scale features.
I actually like your original image, but would just add a little more shadowing or lighting or something to make the words pop a little more, and perhaps separate the subtitle from the title a bit. Have you tried making subtle changes to this original image?
The fonts used in choices 2-7 in the main title don't grab me in the same way the original does. There's something a little too lighthearted about them.
Regardless of which header you choose, I will keep reading and recommending your blog. It's great!
