It is becoming more and more obvious that the so called " Consenses Media " is trying to tamper with and lead Public Opinion instead of just reporting the news. This is not Democracy as I understand it. The news media is not elected by the people. Owners of the news media and their reporters are endeavoring to control Public Opinion and politics, An example of this is the recent boycott by the Consenses Media reporters because the Prime Minister wished to talk to the News Cameras only, before the Throne Speech, was delivered to Parliament. Why cannot the Prime Minister say what he wishes, as an elected representative of the people, without reporters attending with the cameras? Obviously these reporters wished to offer their criticism and opinions. This criticism and opinions are the responsiblity of the Opposition Parties in Parliament and any written or verbal comments by others, not the news media.
I don't know what the suggestion is based on, but, while I was chairman of the SPJ Ethics Committee, I heard from several people saying the SPJ Code of Ethics needs to be updated to reflect social media.
I'm not so sure. The code could talk specifically about the best practices for Facebook and Twitter, but the longstanding principles of fairness, accuracy, sensitivity and so on should apply no matter what platform of communication you use.
Many news organization set specific codes of conduct for conflicts of interest or accepting gifts, to name just two examples. That could and should happen for social media, too.
