Do You Prefer A Dedicated Camera Key?

I'd rather have it than not. As long as they don't take away the on screen shutter release, it really should keep everyone happy.

Not only does the button give me a half click for focus, but it a long press will open the app up directly. I do not want to take up screen space to launch the camera.

+1 for camera key. Configurations like the droid x come close to giving you that digi-cam feel with the dedicated two stop camera key worksand volume rocker serving as the zoom in-out keys. I went from a HTC hero with no camera key to this configuration and I think it has made my phone that much more useful.

I suppose it wouldn't matter if you weren't really interested in using the camera though.

Yes dedicated camera key is very useful. My friends with nexus 1 are jealous of my og droid camera button. Being able to ensure focus is correct before taking the picture is critical, especially with the crappy droid camera that takes like 5 seconds between shots with 1 second shutter lag.
The author is silly if he thinks that tapping a touch screen provides more stability than a dedicated button.
Not to mention that you can start the camera by pressing the camera button also, without having to fumble around in the menu.
Kudos to motorola for adding that button. Let the author of this poll see the error of his ways.

Depends on whether I plan to use the camera a lot, and whether the camera is a key feature of the phone.

For example, the N95 was a camera phone - its 5MP camera with Carl Zeiss lenses was a huge selling point, so much so that it could completely replace a basic dedicated digital camera. For that reason, I think a dedicated camera key was important. For the HTC Hero, the camera was less important, so I think having a hardware button would be daft.

I've always preferred it. Being able to half-press to make sure that close-ups will focus the way I want helps out a lot. Also, it helps with self-portraits on my OG Droid.

I'd really like a dedicated Camera key on my HTC Desire, purely so I can bind it to something more useful... a camera key as a camera key is no use to me, but having a random hardware button I can get to do my bidding (like with Tasker, for example) would be brilliant.

I like a camera hard key because it gives me one extra piece of hardware that can be used for something else...on my Droid2 I have an app that makes the cam button into a way to answer an incoming call, very handywhile driving because I can feel it rather than look for it.
