Don't drivers already have enough to worry about regarding the expense of owning and operating a vehicle?? Our taxes pay for roads filled with potholes, we already pay exhorbitant gas prices, over-inflated repair costs as well as ridiculous insurance charges. We need a break, not a bank-breaker!!!!

A tax on drivers, no! Becoming a widow with children at home 10 years ago, I needed to change my job and lifestyle to meet new demands. Lucky I found a great State job that gave me the flexibility and security I needed in maintaining my home and raising my children. Public transportation was easily accessible so I could be reliable in making it to work without driving more than 3 miles to the train or bus, get there no matter what the weather was or if my car was working. As of last Nov my job was moved out of Boston to a non-central location. I now drive 140 miles round trip, deal with a horrific commute, the option of public tansportation would leave me , catching a 5:42 am train in the morning and arriving home at 9:18 pm for an 8 hour day. Lucky to have a job (a job I love and am qualify for) and building a pension for my future I made the move. I have look for a closer job to home that would cover my needs to live and not have this stressful commute. There have been a few out there but none come close to being as good of a job that I have know. To be taxed on a situation that is out of my control...is not right!!

Not only would it "kill my budget" but it would be bad for the economy. Obama is really clueless as to what is good for the economy. Wasn't this sort of idea first suggested by Deval Patrick a little while ago? Obama + Patrick = two peas in a pod, I guess.

  • Joe Smongeski - 13 years ago

I could not believe my ears when I heard such a tax was being proposed. I thought Obama was an intelligent man, I hope this was one of his aid's ideas that he hasn't heard about yet. Such a tax would not only be unfair and inequitable as mentioned above, it will lead to massive fraud & cheating. I for one would do all I could to defeat any such tracking devices and if odometer checks were done, I'd tamper with mine on a daily basis!! If this is Obama's idea, he's not only stupid, he's REALLY STUPID!! He just won one of the biggest public releation coups in history by getting Bin Ladin, now he wants to screw it up with a hair-brained GESTAPO/COMMUNIST/FASCIST idea like this??? If it is true, he just lost my vote!!

I totally agree with Ron. The more gas you buy, the more tax you are already paying. I am very much concerned about our civil liberties. The Dept. of Transportation already has plans to put a tracking device in your sticker so that they know WHERE you are driving! If you con't believe that, ask your local inspection station station if they have been informed that they have to purchase new equipment due to these new stickers. This is not just about taxing us.
We already have devices in our cars that can tell the police how fast you were going and if you applied your breaks, etc. Our cell phones and GPS devices can locate you and tell where you have been. What has this country come to? Our civil liberties are under attack and we are helpless to do anything about. Sadly, most citizens are too accepting, just shrug their shoulders and say "it's the price you have to pay for freedom". I say, "What Freedom?" Our own country to taking our freedom from us under the name of "Homeland Security". Oops, I probably shouldn't put that in writing.

All they want to do is TAX us to death. enough is enough. a Tax on this a Tax on that
no wonder they call us TAXACHUSETTE.....

  • Sandra S. - 13 years ago

I agree with Ron. I firmly believe that if they do this, the country will go down. People are financially maxed out as it is.This brilliant idea is so very wrong on so many different levels.

  • Ron Drauschke - 13 years ago

Drivers who drive more pay more already. They use more fuel, therefore they pay more gas taxes than those that don't. Double taxing isn't right. That would be like taxing you for buying things with money that was already taxed when you earned it (oops, they do that already, don't they?)
Not to mention the privacy issues of the government tracking you. (more than they already do now)
