Which Screen Size is Ideal?

I think 4 inch screen is the ideal size for a smartphone.

4.3" but in 16:9 ratio. 4.3" in any more square format is too big.

The HTC Evo 4G is 122 x 66 x 12.7 mm, and though I don't own this phone (I have an iPhone, waiting for next Nexus phone most likely), I find its dimensions just right. Wider is OK, but much longer doesn't work in my pocket when I'm sitting down (it's fine standing). The Evo went with a 4.3" 5x3 screen (93.7 x 56.2 mm) which is good, but if we can shrink the vertical borders by getting rid of the buttons (rumored on Ice Cream Sandwich), I'd like to see a 4.5" 16x9 screen (99.6 x 56.0 mm). The width of the screen is about the same, which is OK for a portrait keyboard (at least it's better than the iPhone's 50 mm), and the extra length is useful for HD video display and just more display to work with (e.g., display + GUI elements).

A little bigger like 4.6-4.7" is probably workable, but 5" in either 16x9 or 5x3 I now think is too big. The Dell Streak (with big borders of 22 and 7 mm) is way too big, but even trimming borders will not be enough (for me).

I thought 4" was ideal but then my girlfriend told me I was mistaken, "bigger is better"

Phone size requirements and wants have a lot to do with the size of your hands and how you actually use the device. Example: my wife doesn't like many of the newer phones because it's hard to type messages one-handed. (Smaller hands, can't reach buttons.) She prefers phones between 3.5" and 4". I have considerably larger hands than her. Sure, I can get by on a 3.5" screen, but my hands can handle a larger screen (largest I've owned was the Droid X, at 4.3", but I've worked with a Streak, at 5"), while bigger isn't always better, having that extra real estate certainly does come in handy. In fact, when I went from a 3.5" screen (iPhone) to a 4.3" screen (Droid X), I started using my device less like a phone and far more like a tablet/computer replacement.

Best solution of all? a 3G/4G 7-10" tablet with bluetooth so that you can make calls directly from it via your bluetooth headset. One device doing everything you need. That would be awesome.

When the HD2 came out with its 4.3' screen most of you guys balked at the size of its screen, calling it "too big". Now the Dell Streak is out with the 5' screen and there is more wembling. You guys need to shut up. If you want a phone that can surf the web but with a screen the size of a postage stamp thats fine, no one is mad at you. Just do that and shut up.

Queue the "thats what she said jokes" lol. On topic though, I have a 4.3" Droid X and that seems to be the max size I'll go for since it is still quite thin. Ideally a 4.0" screen size is perfect for my needs and wants.

For a mobile phone, anything more than 4" is too big, unless you happen to have huge hands... These big screens will come and go like bell bottoms, bigger was cooler just. Tip cooler heads prevailed. And I'm grratful for these cooler heads on so many levels.

Seriously, they should come up with transparent folderable gapless oled phone that can stretch to 8" already...nowadays new phones are just not so attractive to me, even the specs go up a bit....the tick of a few sec delay in older phones are just not so noticeable, iPhone 5 can't be compare to newer Android phone as more developers can mod and makes things faster anyway, so what's the diff having just a faster iPhone...1 month can already have a phone to beat that...

I had iPhone 3GS/iPhone4/Atrix/Inspire/Infuse -- I need to say the Infuse on its 4.5 is the Best Phone I even had!

I personally will only buy an android smartphone with a screen bigger than 3.7" when I have no other choice but to. Leave the big screens to tablets and keep smart phones phone sized up to 3.7"-4" max!

Everyone always forgets the humble HD2. That was the phone that kicked off the 4.3" revolution...

I agree with Vincent, it just needs to fit in my pocket. I think five inch is as big as I would go.

As long as the screen gets bigger and not necessarily the device, and as long as it still fits my pockets, the bigger the better!
