Too many minor restrictions distract cops from dealing with the more serious incidents. legalizing safe and sane fireworks with clear boundaries as' Anonymous in Santa Cruz ' proposed in comment #1, would be so smart in every aspect. Why do we continue to let the Sacred Cows who govern our town, get away with useless unproductive solutions for every crisis that arises. It appears that these old school Santa Cruz lawmakers must be stoned or got too stoned too often back in the day.

As a resident of Seabright, homeowner, surfer, engineer, and camper with thirty years experience making and tending to fires I was dismayed by the floodlights pointed out towards the beach and the presence of authorities on the beach before 10 pm. Not only that, authorities were putting out fires not in a designated pit with a single gallon jug of water, creating a safety hazard (hidden hot coals), a worse situation than a lit fire!

If you legalize fireworks (with a permit) then you could probably have a local tax, service charge, or fee to help defray the costs on the 4th. Wrap a fireworks permit into the Live Oak Parking Program operations; its easy!

Fireworks should be legal for sale two weeks prior to the 4th and legal to ignite within 75 feet of the ocean on any beach in Santa Cruz County on the 4th of July from 8 - 10 pm. Authorities should have the option of placing visible markers of the 75 feet at regular intervals to facilitate enforcement at more heavily traffic beaches. Why 75 feet? It makes you think about it, but is ample space.

Gotta a better idea? What's your idea?
