I have no problem using gmail, by the way...are you accessing it through the e-mail app?
One suggestion: have you used Splashtop? That will let you host some of those functions on another computer, and access them on your Fire. I specifically tested Google calendar that way...

The lack of useful apps on the Fire is a real annoyance. There are tons of games but many of the functional apps found on the Ipad/Iphone or in the Android app store are inexplicably not there. Being able to use gmail, sync my calender, etc. - all pretty basic but unavailable.
