shame on you for chasing THIS ambulance, wasting your time on this case will only take away your services from someone who has truly been wronged and deserves a settlement that you will keep the lions share of. very disappointing.

IF SHE HAD NOT DECIDED TO BECOME A CRIMINAL THEN WE WOULD NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT. SHE GOT EXACTLY WHAT SHE DESERVED. THE OFFICER IN QUESTION ACTED WELL WITHIN HIS RIGHTS SHE ABUSED HERS. EVERY CRIMINAL SHOULD BE TREATED IN THIS SAME MANNER. IF YOU BREAK THE LAW ,YOU WILL BE ARRESTED, IF YOU RESIST ARREST YOU WILL BE DEALT WITH IN A MANNER THAT ASSURES THE OFFICERS SAFETY, IF YOU DO NOT LIKE IT DO NOT COMMIT CRIMES. DUH!

Excessive Force would have been him shooting her......

I wonder what the comments would be if the cop were not "large". What if he was an in shape officer and still used the taser? I have said before and will again - what happens if there were two suspects committing a crime - and one is injured or dies - the other is charged with the death. In this case - the suspect decided to flee / elude police by trying to escape and she got injured. Why not charge her with the crime? Leave the cop alone - he was doing his job - this girl would not be in this position had SHE not decided to try and escape from law enforcement.

If this happened on grass, there would be no discussion, end of story.

This girl is a crook a felon. She got out of the cuffs two times. She could have been shot. When are we going to stop supporting scum bag lawyers like Hazlett who what to sue every one so they can have a big name.

if he's not fired, this fat ass cop would be getting away with murder (surely being terri schaivo'd is a fate worse than death). common sense dictates that someone running in handcuffs will smack their face on the pavement if they fall, if he couldn't think of that in the heat of the moment, he doesn't deserve a badge, and definitely shouldn't be handling weapons of any kind.

even ignoring the outcome, this is far and away excessive use of force. if you can't keep a 95-lb girl in custody with a strong grip, you are a terrible cop, plain and simple. fire him because of that, at least.

If the police officer reached out to grab the suspect (like some people are suggesting) and she fell and hit her head on the pavement I'm sure I would be hearing "Why didn't he use the taser? He's so much bigger than she is." It's amazing how everyone has 20/20 hindsight. Whether or not he could have grabbed her or waited until/if she ran on grass to use the taser or that she shouldn't have had a chance to flee is irrelevant. The suspect fled and the police officer's instincts took over which led to taser instead of physically grab the suspect. Bottom line, it was a bad situation and the police officer was doing his job. In my opinion, more relevant questions would be "Why did she run?" or "Why did she break the law to get arrested in the first place?" Do you think she cared about the people she involved in the 2 hit and runs that led her to get arrested? Why don't we hold people accountable for their own actions? The suspect fleeing was indication that she was well aware of the consequences her actions. Everyone has to be a victim these days. Let's put an end to the pussification of America.

It is obvious that this"out of shape" officer could have made the effort to run his fat ass a few more steps to easily overtake her & just grab her by the arm to stop her-she would simply have bounced back against the cushion of his protruding belly & we wouldn't be debating this issue right now. It's not like it is the Florida summer & it's 500 degrees outside. C-mon, officer, really? And then for them to just stand over her & not even bother to stoop down to offer a gesture of human concern?? Repeat offender with a record or not, the inhumanity disgusts me.

Obviously, hindsight is 20/20, but I still believe the police are too quick to deploy the taser. It seems to me that tasers originally were to be used as an alternative to using deadly force. Obviously the police wouldn't shoot someone in the back on purpose, so why use the taser in the back. She was no threat to the officer, other than exposing him for poor police work....allowing her to escape. In addition, I believe our LEO's should maintain a certain level of physical health if on the street. I could have caught her within 10 steps. Again, with all this said, the guy has a tough job for not the best pay. FHP troopers usually aren't getting hugh paychecks and I'd hate to see another person unemployed.

I think this cop should be fired. She is old enough to know that you should not run from the cops, but this jackass of a cop could have reached out and got her by arm and stopped her. But no he had to taze her and ruined her life forever.Just needs to be fired and sued.

1st of all had the tropper cuffed the girl right where she wasnt able to get 1 hand out of the cuffs while in the car shows his inability to cuff his prisioner. 2nd once he saw how slippery she was he should have treated her as such. meaning when he walked her inside he was escorting her off to booking. again she should of never been giving A CHANCE TO FLEE PERIOD. 3rd once she was giving the chance 2 run BECAUSE SHE WAS NOT PROPERLY DETAINED / CUFFED AGAIN. HE AGAIN DISPLAYS HIS INABILITY TO FOLLOW PROCEDURE & ATLEAST TRY AND WARN HER STOP OR U WILL BE TASED. 4TH HE NEVER CAME CLOSE TO AFULL RUN. HELL NOT EVEN A JOG BARLEY A FAST WALKING EFFORT TO CATCH HER. WHAT HAPPENING TO SAYING HEY IM APOLICE MAN I MIGHT HAVE TO BE IN SHAPE TO CATCH A FLEEING PRISIONER. 5th he claims if he had tackled her to stop her they both could of gpt hurt. whatever yeah it worked out much better this way. really u couldn t have actually ran & grabed her by the shirt the hair even & acomplish the same thing ? lazy sorry ass cop who couldt keep a closer eye on his prisioner. i wanna hire him to babbysit . i guess a fireman should aim a high presure water hose to get a kitten out of a tree. instead of using a ladder. or maybe just shot it, BOTTOM LINE HE DID NOT DETAIN HIS PRISIONER. AND THATS AFTER U KNOW SHE TOOK 1 HAND OUT OF A CUFF JACK ASS. AND TO U BUBBA & SPICE U SIDE WITH THE POLICE CAUSE IT BENEFITS U BOTH. AS U ARE BOTH HIGHER PROFILE PEOPLE. U SUPPORT THE POLICE GREAT AS I DO. U ARE SMART ENOUGH YO KNOW IF U ARE LIKED BY THE POLICE. IF U ARE PULLED OVER U ARE MORE LIKELY TO CATCH A BREAK. FOR WHATEVER REASON THEY PULLED U OVER. U COULD PROBALY GET OUT OF A DUI SPEEDING WHATEVER DONT BE AN ASS KISSER BE U GET OFF THE COPS JOCK & SPICE CAN GET OFF YOURS

i think that if your to out of shape to do you job, then you need to look for another one.You can clearly see that he was in range to get her without using the taser. (WHAT A LAZY MF er).

  • Vali - 12 years ago

I don't feel that the taser was necessary. I think he was just to lazy (to obese) to continue the chase. Seriously how far was she gonna get with cuffs on ??? I am not defending her for running but he wouldn't even have had to tackle her, just grab the cuffs or her arm. Taser happy is what I say due to being to fat to run anymore. One of the LEO's on Bubba said a LEO he knew broke his wrist grabbing at someones cuffs. Way better then what happened to this girl

  • rob - 12 years ago

i support law enforcement and understand that their job is not always easy, but i believe this situation could have been handled differantly. the officer was three times this girls size, he could have easily yoked her up,and not even had to take her to the ground. really what was he afraid of,getting kicked in the shin?

  • Rob - 12 years ago

Most of the people commenting obviously know nothing about the police work and the force continuum. A few people sound smart, but anybody who has studied the use of force can obviously see that this was justified. Her best chance at not being injured was using the taser. Had this office attempted to take her down the potential for injury was much higher. It is very unfortunate what happened, however this officer is not at fault. I love how the public is so quick to judge when they have very little knowledge in the subject. It is a disgrace to see how some people here want to see this trooper's head smashed into the asphalt or want to beat him or take his job from him. Forget about that fact that she is pretty young lady and think about how she is a criminal who is fleeing custody. I hope this trooper will keep his job, and he will not worry about all the bad publicity and just know there is people out here who support him.

This is a fine example of what our peace officers do. I am sickened good thing he worried about his weight falling on her. He need to have both testicals tased everyday while he watches this video until he's man enough to apologize for wasting taxpayer money. I can't believe that anyone sees justification. Must like beating woman like most so called peace officers. Peace????

  • chris - 12 years ago

i think he should have used other means to controling a harmless girl .cops have more resorces like a radio for more help while in pursuit to capture a person of that size an for a petty crime . plus having more than 1 cop on site no need for that type of action .

  • ned shnittt - 12 years ago

i think the fat bastard was running out of gas and used unecessary force to bring a young girl down, that was no threat to anybody! i think that officer should have his head smashed on the pavement. wish that girl all the best!!

  • Bearx - 12 years ago

Looking at the video, use of the taser was unnecessary while the suspect was cuffed. Listening this morning with the LEOs being correct in their operating procedures. I think that the officer should have waited for an opportunity to find a softer spot to bring her down. Another option would be to tire her out. She was cuffed not going to far.

  • Bust one wins - 12 years ago

Fhp will pay big for this. One of the best lawyers in the state is on this they will win.

  • Stephanie - 12 years ago

After watching the video several times, the girl was only an arms reach from the officer when he pulled the trigger. There was no need to use the Taser gun. He could have easily caught her, and stopped her. You can tell from the moment she hits the ground that permanent damage was done; all you have to do is watch the way her body goes lifeless. I understand that she should not have run, but the punishment did not fit the crime here. She was not being combative, and there was no way that she was going to outrun the officer, since she was in handcuffs. This was a bad call by this officer. I agree that the girl had to be taken down, but there was probably a better way to do it.

  • Jamie - 12 years ago

Bottom line she ran. Don't run and no action would have taken place. She put herself in the position and I'm tired of people not taking responsibility for their actions. He is trained to use the tazer in these situations so I have no problem with it it is a sad end to the story but like I said she shouldn't have ran.

  • deb - 12 years ago

The girl running made the wrong decision, however if you look at the officer in the video he is only at a brisk walk. He could have caught her with just a little effort of a jog....Why do they keep saying if he tackled her the same result could have happened? Looking at this video there was no call for even a tackle. It looks like this big guy could have handled this total different and I bet if he a second chance at it. HE WOULD

  • eric - 12 years ago

She ran and now she is paying the price!

  • Chris - 12 years ago

I hold the highest of respect for law enforcement, with an uncle that served as sheriff and a cousin that is currently a deputy sherriff. Their job is not easy and most of all, not black and white. But in eye for eye mentality, the treatment needs to fit the crime. The girl should not have run, but that cop has been trained to handle situations far worse. And Kevin's comments on the show this morning suggest that FHP has not apologized to the mother... right or wrong, have they no decency??

  • FYBIJAR - 12 years ago

Military personnel have to be in certain weight/height standards and have to pass a physical readiness test bi-annually. I think the people "protecting and serving” here stateside might need to adopt the same plan. This might alleviate the need to use a non-lethal "weapon" at normal arms length. I at least hope that the officer has some remorse for not exercising all other avenues of subduing before pulling out the taser so he didn't have to expel any more than necessary exertion on his part.

  • chrissie - 12 years ago

wow.... is all i can say

  • robert - 12 years ago

I definitely believe this officer could have simply caught the girl as she was running away, especially given his close proximity of nearly an arms length away when he deployed his taser. However, I also feel that he may have only reacted as he was trained. Most importantly, let's not over look the fact that this girl was making every attempt to escape the custody of police who lawfully arrested her. I would have to think this tragedy is mostly due to the poor decision of the criminal who decided to run. As always, the public will monday morning quarterback this dead horse and publicly crucify this trooper who was put in the position to react to a criminal's actions. Personally I don't think the decision to taser was the best option, however it wasn't excessive and it was certainly effective.

  • mindi - 12 years ago

when this dude pointed his taser at her he could pretty much grab her... if he wasnt such a fat ass then this girl wouldnt be in a hospital bed... he could have simply reached out and grabbed her!!! wow just shows how lil some officers try or care!
