Sacha Baron Cohen's red carpet stunt as 'The Dictator' was...

I find his humor sophomoric and fail to see the appeal he has. Must be to high school aged boys. While I don't think his stunt was mean-spirited (I think he has an overblown concept of his own hilarity), it was stupid, plain and simple. A joke is one thing -- one that ends up with a man's suit covered with crap is another. Has nothing to do with your opinion of the value of the Oscars. It's just a matter of taste -- and this stunt, like so many others of Cohen's -- is in poor taste. He's like the little boy in school who misbehaved so he could get attention.

Just annoying. Not the right moment for it. For all of those who think it was funny, I ask: How funny would it had been if it was you? His mother did not teach him how to behave in public.

How would you feel if you showed up to a formal event (no matter what it was) and some prankster purposely spilled ashes all over your suit?

Even in other contexts, I don't care for Cohen's brand of humor, which tends to victimize and mock unsuspecting people. And this wasn't the context for that brand of humor AT ALL.

Are you kidding me? I'm with Jeffrey to a point. The most pretentious over the top display of self aggrandizement and somehow Cohen's stunt is the part that is not appropriate? I thought it was not only hilarious but wish we had more. Look at this for what it is, a ridiculous awards show - where actors give other actors awards. Nothing more. No one should take themselves that seriously, especially not actors.

...And I'm a little beside myself that you felt the need to comment about people's sensitivities. The poll asks for people to vote for their 'opinion.' Although not mean spirited, I was annoyed by Baron Cohen's need to promote his movie at the event in this format. Yes, the Oscars are an awards show, not a Nobel peace price, but can't it come off without the need for him to 'play a role' instead of just being himself. They already hired their host/talent for the event and they didn't ask him. Why couldn't he just attend, like everyone else, instead of making it into another moment of self-promotion? Granted, I do understand that is the underlying part of their industry - self-promotion, but he couldn't take a night off and respond to people without playing a character? It was just plain annoying...and it was disrespectful of him to dump pancake batter on Seacrest's tux. It was a formal event and that was just not right.

I actually cannot stand any of the awards shows, but having said that I think that the gag (and I want to) went overboard when he decided to spill the ashes all over the place. Yes, I know the whole Oscars event is ridiculous to begin with, but it is what it is and Cohen's stunt went to far. If he had been good enough to win one and did the gag on stage all over himself, that might have been funny.

I'm quite suprised that so many people thought that his stunt was mean-spirited and annoying. Are we really as a society holding the Oscars up as some sort of serious event. It's an awards show for.....movies! This isnt the Nobel Prize, or a Macarthur Grant. These are awards for movies. I didnt know so many people walked around with a stick up their butt. Relax, it was a joke. Whether you thought it was funny or not is one thing. But to say, better yet to vote, that the ridiculous red carpet walk...where celebrities are wearing jewelry (mined by third world country slaves), lavish tuxs and dresses (the cost of which could clothe entire coutries of poor) and to be so serious when there are actual issues to be serious about. These are movies!!!!!! I just am a little beside myself that I had to write a comment about how sensitive we are.
