Distributed caches (AppFabric Caching, Memcached, etc.)
NoSQL Database
Separate servers for static vs. dynamic content
Asynchronous request processing (e.g. AsyncController base class rather than Controller or similar for WebForms)
Web farms (horizontal scaling)
Tuning Relational Database Performance
Data caching (Page / Controller Cache property)
Make use of CDNs
I don't do anything special to scale.
