Should homeowners be allowed to opt out of B.C. Hydro's smart meter program?

Anyone who wants to fight for a greener, more energy efficient BC should want to get a smart meter ASAP. Analog meters are wasteful, less private (you can view the info right on the meter!), and totally inefficient.
BC has been going downhill lately, and so many people jump to blame the government, or big corporations while taking litte or no personal responsibility for why BC is the most wasteful province in Canada. We are the worst province for recycling, we produce the most garbage per capita, use the most energy per capita, and presumably waste the most energy per capita. We need smart meters and smart grids so that our consumers can begin to take personal responsibility for their own actions.

    for Darren Mauthe

If you check stop smart meters bc websites they have a good photo of a digital meter that is not a smart meter. Hope this helps.
It happened to us and hydro gave an excuse that the old meter didn't work. The house was vacant with power off for 2 months so 2 meter readings showed no usage there fore they said the analog must be broken. They never did contact us until we questioned the new style of meter

Interesting how almost 95% want the ability of opt out of the smart meter. IIRC Rich Coleman had that typical "don't like it move out of BC" attitude.

The HST proved to be the downfall of the Liar Campbell maybe it is time to have the smart meters the demise of the Lieberals.

About 3 yrs ago, we had power installed on our property and the meter is digital... how do you tell if it's a smart meter? It has differences from what I have seen online (pics of smart meters).
We did send a letter to BC Hydro (cc'd to Corix and about 15 mp's) advising them that they are not permitted to come on our property to install a smart meter. In our opinion, there is no need to replace technology that is only 3 years old.

We had ours stealthily installed while I was at home with a gall-bladder attack and was on the couch 10ft from the front door. Nobody knocked. My children came home, and handed me the BCHydro 'pamphlet of lies'. I went outside to look, and sure enough, i had a new smart meter. Just like that. I had my letter of refusal all ready to post, but then became sick for a week and never even thought about it. Now it is too late. They refuse to remove it. How can this be right? I called BCHydro last week to set up a payment plan for my last HUGE bill, and the lady thanked me for supporting BCHydro!!! I laughed out loud and told her that in NO WAY do i support BCHydro, we just have no choice in this province. Choice...democracy...what is going on with this province? The Liberals obviously want everyone to hate them more, and to not vote for them come election time. Well, that is fine, because nobody will after being given the shaft by them AGAIN.

on Nov 19th hydro installed a smart meter on our daughters house .Nov and Dec bill came in at 321.85 when she got Jan-Feb statement it came it at 641.20!!! she hasn't done any thing different in her house the weather was a little colder but not 320.00 colder after three weeks of calling hydro two customer service reps and one tech rep one customer service supervisor she was sent a electric billing history, 401.61 for the same billing time last year. we asked for a print out of how you go about reading the new meters they seht me a meter test request form to fill out for a test charge of $ 92.00 dollars. I told the supervisor that I,m not refusing to pay the bill just not that much . SO AT THIS POINT I,M NOT SURE we will be going ???

Due to having sensitvities to wireless signals and having the hydro meter located outside a bedroom wall, I am not in favour of having the meter replaced with a wireless one.

This is just another thing like the HST which is being dumped onto us by this Liberal Govt.,maybe they will listen a the polls when they loose.

Thank you to 'Milt' for telling it like it is. Bullying is the word and safe Smart Meters they are not by any stretch. Most certainly we should be able to opt out, and as Milt says, if BC hydro didnt know they are not innocent, they wouldnt be rushing to install them and get out. Shame shame on more dangerous interference in our lives for no good reason.

Smart Meters ? still not proven smart or safe. Still not proven secure.Still not wanted.
These things are not even CSA or UL approved .
Aside from the fact that they are classed in the same group as class 2b carcinogens by WHO.

If, as the liebrals would have us believe, there is no danger from these meters , then put a stop to the trespassing, bullying and intimidation tactics being used by corix under orders from hydro,to install them and get out of town before it hits the fan. 41 cities are a lot of people cristy. (People = votes= NDP -Conservative, Green or turtle party over liebrals next year).

Place the question on the next ballot for us (the voters) to decide whether we want an invasion of health or security for our selves.

If the liebrals desired so badly to retire as a party then why could they not just quit and admit that they were not capable of managing a province instead of attempting to flush the remaining bits of province left down the toilet before leaving this mess that will take years to attempt to repair. I really pity the next 2-3 governments and for my sake wish them luck.

We are talking "wireless" Smart Meters !
Which means measuring the use of the electricity in a type of short-wave transmission, similar to the cellphone and WiFi systems.
But this system has some dangerous drawbacks :
1.] It measures the use of electricity at least every 6 seconds by sending a spike that shows the amount of use at that moment in time to the Main Office.
2.] The strength of that spike is much larger then the Cellphone waves.
3.] The Smart Meter works 24/7 AND
4.] The Smart Meter is FORCED on me - while I have a choice if I want to use a cellphone or WiFi technology.
The only drawback with a Cellphone is the Cellphone Amplifiers that are mounted on certain rooftops. But I at least have a CHOICE where I want to live to avoid the strength of these amplifiers.

These Smart Meters are available in much safer WIRED technologies. The country of Italy and the State of Idaho in the USA have wired systems.
So the question is: WHY DO WE NOT HAVE A SAFE SYSTEM.
The Minister of Energy who foists these dangerous Smart Meters on us could have easily used the safe method AND I like to emphasize: without any extra cost, as a matter of fact even cheaper.
