From the things I've seen, the best homework is simple for the students. Rewriting words, writing words in sentences, drawing pictures for words' meanings, etc. These things should not take too long and are practice for the student.

Please see my above comment, however, to elaborate on the spelling assignment, it would consist of a different assignment each night, but the students could expect the same assignment each day of the week. For example, Mondays: write spelling words 5 times each, Tuesdays: alphabetize spelling words, etc.
