Canadian Standard A23.1 has mandated Performance Specs for 7 or 8 years. No other option permitted.
It has taken a while for the concrete industry (and consultants and owners) to adjust to it with proper tests and documentation. But thousands of projects successfully completed to date.
We are learning all the time about the merits of documented performance (or strength, for example) instead of reviewing cement contents etc which really tell you nothing. Highly recommended procedure.
Performance based specifications are common place for us and something we are trying to bring to the pervious concrete community. This only makes sense to me as it is performance that we are trying to achieve so why does it matter how it is achieved. Even with a known quality mix design, a new or inexperienced producer could still produce inferior performing concrete.
