Is calf roping barbaric? Is the Pope Catholic? Add chuck wagon races to the mix, and single steer roping (the worse event in all of rodeo, far worse than "horse tripping").
Did you see the SHARK video of last month's Reno Rodeo, in which two roping calves suffered life-threatening injuries in two separate "jerk downs" (illegal under both arena and PRCA rules)? One calf suffered an obvious broken neck, yet was STILL tied by the cowboy, while being dragged by the horse by the neck. Some "sport"!
I was present at the 1995 California Rodeo/Salinas when five animals died. A roping calf had his back broken in yet another "jerk down" (again, a violation of PRCA rules). Euthanized? Nope, simply trucked off to slaughter, terrified and in agony. I asked the attending vet (Dr. Gary Deter, now retired) if the calf received any pain-killers. His response, "No, that would ruin the meat for human consumption." So much for rodeo's concern for animal welfare. The guy should have had his license revoked for malpractice.
At this same rodeo in 2009, three roping calves suffered broken legs during the rodeo's "slack" period, and were euthanized. I asked the attending vet, Dr. Tim Eastman (who had been there for 10 years) if he had submitted the injury reports to the California State Veterinary Medical Board, as required by law (Penal Code 596.7, which I sponsored in 1999). HE HAD NEVER EVEN HEARD OF THE LAW! Nor had he submitted the reports. And this is one of the country's pre-eminent rodeos. Things are even worse on the amateur circuit. And at the Mexican0-style "charreadas," now spreading across the country.
Working cowboys never practiced calf roping as a timed event--they'd have been fired on the spot by the rancher. Rhode Island banned tie-down calf roping back in 1989. Others should follow suit. Ditto single steer roping, the worst event in all of rodeo.
It's no accident that the PRCA changed the name of the calf roping event to "tie down roping" a few years back, a blatant and disingenuous attempt to deflect growing public criticism of this brutal event. And to mere babies yet, often still unweaned. Shame on all concerned.
Sincerely,

Michael MacDonald: The article raises a very, very basic question that I think you ought to have worked out yourself. Comparing a human infant's capacity for suffering to a young cow's capacity for suffering is fair game. In fact, the cow might have a *greater* capacity, if anything. This has nothing to do with the legal responsibility of non-humans (and --for extra fun thoughts-- infant humans) that you allude to.

PM Harper is telling the Chinese government that the Stampede represents Canada, on your tax dollar.
This is animal abuse at its most obvious.
BTW, I applaud people that took the time to think about it and voted "I don't know" also.
The poll doesn't matter to me, awareness does.
Best regards all.

Also, it is fair to include that PM Harper is from Calgary,
and has been to China promoting the Stampede.

And the focus on the article is that the Stampede represents Canada, NOT.
Especially meant to draw Chinese tourists.
If it wasn't so insulting, I'd consider it a joke.

Roping is such a retarded dare i say it sport. Redneck horse riding tough guys throwing a rope around a calf's neck wrenching it over in forces found in a car wreck, then roping their legs together and slamming it in the ground with arms in the air like they just concord the worlds greatest feat is such a sad example of what humans are capable of achieving.

Get real - these 'heroes' are roping 3 month old terrified babies, who otherwise are kept confined.
How about a little news on how steeplechase horses sometimes run themselves to death
for their 'owners'.
Ancient civilizations realized we were one with the planet.
This is no longer the case, which is why we see our ecosystem being destroyed in our faces.
