Leave Main Sreet a no parking street totally. A street for pedestrians. Leave free parking at all the existing lots.

My family moved here five years ago, and we had the same initial reaction that Allison's father did. We strolled Main Street and commented to each other what a charming town this was, that the downtown area was easily accessible and yes, we admired the aesthetic of meter free parking. That being said, I'd like to hear more regarding the argument for meters, at least in the parking lots. Perhaps if we had more parking in the areas around Main Street and eliminated curb side parking altogether on Main Street, meters might be a good source of revenue.... just a thought. Would like to see more information about this proposal.

It will not kill down town businesses forever...but, it will make us just as ugly as other down towns. In Westport, ugly is not acceptable

My dad came to visit us in Westport last month for the first time. (We just moved here two months ago). The first thing he said when we drove down main street was -- wow this is a 'true' town! I asked him what he meant and he explained that the sign of a really great town is one without parking meters. The aesthetic, the ease, the trust one feels when they can drive into town and just park. His hometown of Pacific Palisades, California started to decline in his opinion when they installed parking meters on a similar main street. It's never been the same 'true' feel. No parking meters equals aesthetic perfection.
