I live in Canada and i travel to Detroit often i have never had an issue anywhere ive gone in the city. It all depends on the person if your scared dont bother you be looking around like you lost n ppl notice that which makes you a target. Look like you fit in (even if your completely lost) just look like you fit in and you wokt have a ploblem. Thats the issue people travel and think they can act the way they do when they at home. Me personally i would rather be in Detroit then in my Own Canadian city across the river.

Why are they complaining about pay? They steal and rob at every opportunity. White officers act like a occupying army. Black officers are interested in settling old grevieous. Vonn party store is unloaded every night by our boys in blue, not some nights, but every night. Vonns on Grand River/McGraw. Come check it out. Bring I.A. with you they may want a cut also.

Well I was born and raised in Detroit. Thats my city forever and always. I love the city and I do plan on visiting.

  • Dean - 8 years ago

Obviously don't go looking for trouble and you'll be ok. I love detroit. Better restaurant servings, and people are actually pretty friendly, more so than in my country home town. Sounds like the start up of martial law to me.

Been going to Detroit for years. Car shows, concerts and sporting events. Its common sense, dont hang out in the wrong places after dark and use your head. About a year ago we went there just the 2 of us JUST TO VISIT, and to appreciate the town. Yes its run down, yet its poor, but we walked around downtown for an hour, given it was day time. The gun laws need to loosen up so people aren't so inclined to rob someone or b&e.

I been wanting to become a cop since I finished high school and this state don't let me beacouse I'm not a citizen yet I been living in USA more then half of my life came here 10 in 27? And why I can't be a cop ? I don't even have a record ever. A bad one. Answer me that

  • S.Lynk - 8 years ago

There is a great deal wrong with Detroit, but how dare an article be written telling society Detroit is not safe to enter based on its cops being under paid/staffed. Tell us our cops need to paid more, tell us we need more cops to pay, but DO NOT tell us this city is too dangerous to enter.

  • Tyler - 9 years ago

I live here, I work EMS here, the city is making a turn around. It's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, yes it needs a lot of work but its making progress.

  • Mike - 9 years ago

I love Detroit, yea the cops suck and the ambulances as well but other than that I live here I sleep here and I ain't afraid of squat everyone is just stereotyping Detroit for its abandoned houses

  • Ally - 9 years ago

Yes hand down I am afraid to go down to Detroit. I use to work down there a year ago and I was robbed not once not twice but three times. I haven't been down there since. Not for a concert or sporting event. I quit my job and everything. And I made good money too. It's a shame.

  • Bobbie - 9 years ago

Despite the sports and entertainment districts, Detroit is third world America. It is not safe and no sane person would want to raise a family there.

The media-fed Detroit comeback story is total bunk. Anyone can give lip service but one cannot deny what their eyes see.

At best, Detroit will wallow in mediocracy for the next 40 years. My advice is move from the general area. There really are better places to live.

  • Chris - 9 years ago

Why don't we just re-title the poll at what it's really getting at "ARE YOU AFRAID OF BLACK PEOPLE?" Because that's why all these honky, white-trash, inbred, ignorant POS's really came here to comment. Polls like this make me ashamed to a white male. There's a good portion of my race/gender which would be more useful being mulched into fertilizer than roaming the world being allowed to voice their opinions.

  • doug - 9 years ago

I blame all the parents in detroit who sell drugs dont have a real job and raise their kids around all that so when they get older they think its how life is. parents need to teach their kids self respect and morals so they know that hard work and determination can get u whatever u want in life not parents driving 50.000 dollar cars living in broken down houses and living off section 8 and foodstamps dont make babies if u cant raise them right your children only know what they see everyday things will never change until people change the way they live and how they raise their children detroit is a awesome place to visit but if u get caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time bad things can happen but thats anywhere u go people need to learn to work hard for things they want instead of taking it from the people that do. There are to many people who only care about themselves in this world start caring more about others and learn to work together and detroit can be the city it once was get your heads out of your asses and get a job life is much easier that way

  • max - 9 years ago

I'm totally comfortable with going to Detroit, it may not be perfect but neither is any other city you go to...

  • The L Train - 9 years ago

Listen up, you get bad areas in ALL Metropolitan areas.... NOT just Detroit!!! We go downtown (my wife, kids and myself) ALL the time. I know quite a few people who go downtown i.e.; Ford Field, Comerica Park, Joe Louis, DAC, Hockeytown, Slows, Bucharest I think ya get the idea... never a problem. Its probable that the majority of these guys are locked and loaded... so less fear of any issues happening, but nonetheless. We haven't ever had any problems and we'll continue to go!! We'll not be bullied by POS anywhere. If they chose that they want a problem, they'll definitely get it with us. We usually go in bigger groups and the majority of us carry, so if they want to make bad decisions in life.... we'll fix it so they don't have to worry about that anymore. The Detroit PD can't be everywhere all the time..... and we don't mind helping to uphold the law!!!!

I live Detroit many of friends their from all different races. I've never had a bad in counter with anyone or anything

    My child and I

  • twin banks - 9 years ago

I lived in Detroit for 6 years now not to mention I've been coming here for years as a child I have never had any problems that serious to where I feel in safe. My and I can walk to the store yeah guys try to come on to me but nothing more than that. I hang out plenty of days night all over the metro Detroit area and Im not afraid I walk around with a strong faith of god on my shoulders and that's everywhere I go

  • Jessica - 9 years ago

I am not afraid of downtown the main part of the city but it's when you get outside of the tall buildings into the rural Detroit that is when it gets scary. People coming up to your car, burned homes and buildings and groups of gangs hang out at every had station.

  • detroit getajob - 9 years ago

Down town shows some promise thanks to rich white people buying up the sky scrapers in the last 3 years but bull dose the rest

  • Lisa - 9 years ago

This is such bull sh*t. I go to Detroit almost everyday for yoga and walk down Woodward on my lonesome for six consecutive months now and I am alive and fine. Yes, there are some sketchy parts of Detroit but you'll get sketchy parts in any city you enter. Posting links like this scaring people off from going to Detroit will only hurt this city more. We need commission, tourism, and visitors so the city can actually stay running and NOT bankrupt. No, you don't you need a gun to walk down the street haha that is actually the most ignorant comment I read. Just be aware of your surroundings, and that's for anywhere you go.

  • paul - 9 years ago

I've been traveling to Detroit for 3 years now and I've been to 2 hallowickids. Each time I was fine and felt nothing but safe (other than being in unfamiliar territory). I won't deny I've heard some epic horror story's though, people need to learn to keep to themselves.

  • Rodney - 9 years ago

I worked in the city for 8 years....Seen alot of crazy stuff go on...But i would do it again...You just have to carry a gun..

  • Michael - 9 years ago

Used to drive to Detroit everyday for work this past summer. Good portion if my drive was through some run down neighborhoods. Never had any security problem or felt in danger at any time. I would even walk 15 minutes, on my own, to lunch in the city every day during my break. Honestly Detroit isn't a bad place, and is on it's way to recovery. Not too happy with the fear mongering of this article. If the authors are trying to profit by exaggerating the troubles of a city that needs nothing but support and good media attention to recover, that's pretty despicable. Shame on the author

  • A King - 11 years ago

NsI live near detroit, and i drive around detroit every day. It is in ruins. But still have no problems or fears of this once beautifull place. I belive that this place is due for a revival!

  • sidney - 11 years ago

i go to Detroit every year nad have met nothing but nice people.. i think this article is fear farming.

  • Oliver Jones - 12 years ago

My family has lived in Detroit for over fifty years, we seem to do just fine, if you look for trouble you will find it. If you don't look for trouble you will be a victim of it. Just like any large city you need to be aware of your surroundings. Put on your big boy or big girl pants and be a responsible adult. This article is about mostly the politics of police pay. While I understand the police officers position, I don't think its' a good idea to use scare tactics to drive home their point. Most people carry on their lives in Detroit day in and day out without significant problems as it relates to crime. Police respond to crime after it is committed 95 percent of the time. That is one reason I conceal carry. That doesn't mean that I will quick draw on someone' its just means that if I have a reasonable chance of defending myself I might be able to do so. My first reaction will be to FLEE, if I can't go with the FLOW, last resort FIGHT....I made it 60 years so far and love being a Detroiter.

  • kesha - 12 years ago

Detroit is bad if you dont know were you are going. the city is big people know where to go . Try Flint that is a battle field KNOW WHERE TO GO!

  • joe - 12 years ago

Hey, maybe those two things are connected?

    "OMG RACIST!!!!!11"

  • Richal - 12 years ago

How can you call your fellow human an animal, call them to be nuked, etc? This is just more fear mongering from the police, pitting us against our fellow people. I'm more afraid of any of you with your dehumanized comments than I am of the people of Detroit. If you want to talk about how bad it is, I hope you're at least trying to help rather than cowering behind your screen and spouting judgements.

  • Rick - 12 years ago

It's sounding more and more like Phenix City, Alabama in the 1950's when crime was so rampant that the U.S. Government had to send in the military to control it. Check out the movie: The Phenix City Story".

And this boys and girls, is exactly why we can't let them disarm us.
What happens when the people that deliver food refuse to go in.
What happens when the utility workers are afraid to go in.
They will come out and swarm the suburbs and surrounding area
like a nest of mad hornets.
The unarmed will be the first to fall as prey.

  • Canook - 12 years ago

    JOHNSON-
IT IS NOT THE PEOPLE THAT WORKED WHEN DETROIT WAS BOOMING-
IN THE 50'S THRU THE 80's-IT IS THE EBT,SNAP LOVIN CHILDREN AND GRANDBABIES OF
    THOSE PEOPLE.

DETROIT IS A ANIMAL INFESTED JUNGLE OF DEGENERATES-THEY JUST HAPPEN TO BE 85-90
    PERCENT BLACK .

AND LET US NOT FORGET THE FILTHY ARAB POPULATION IN DETROIT.

JUST LOOK ACROSS THE RIVER TO WINDSOR-PUT IT TOGETHER YET?

THERE IS NO REBUILDING DETROIT-IT IS A HUMAN WASTELAND AND SHOULD BE NUKED

None of my friends or family will be going to ANY Democrat ran city to spend any of our hard earned $. Detroit or Chicago or other cities can forget any money from us. There is a reason for White Flight, and its not going to change any time soon.

Detroit where the weak are killed and Eaten!!!!

  • johnson - 12 years ago

Its 2012 and we americans are still hiding behind race,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it;s going to take all people of all races to come together to make detroit better. It won't get better if we blame the races and not confront our own inner fears. How can all the African Americans who built this country and helped to make the motor city the motor city be filty animals? I am scared by some of the comments I am seeing on this blog. We all need to come together to rebuild Detroit. There is nothing to fear but fear itself.

Hmmmmmmm Guess, they finally found out how vicious the Detroit Police can be. The Police are the real criminals & your real concerns for saftey, surprised they would even put up a warning hahahahah

  • Ray - 12 years ago

One cannot count on a timely police response if you run into trouble in Detroit. I think the predators know that. I feel I have a target on my back when I go down there...even while driving.

  • Hank - 12 years ago

Detroit in 1950 had a 2,000,000 population. It was over 90% white. People worked
and crime was low. now Detroit has a population of 700,000 and it is 90% Black.
Crime is out of control. These people are simply thugs and animals. Get out while
    you can and stay away.

  • JBean - 12 years ago

  • DOCTOR LOVE - 12 years ago

Detroit is no different than any big city. People in the suburbs bash Detroit and guess where their kids are on weekends. Most people who bash Detroit never even have been to the city.Detroit has Great Sports Teams, Great Entertainment,Great Places to Eat and Plenty of Things to See and Do. DRUGS,BREAK-INS,CRIME,POOR SCHOOLS are not unique to Detroit. Every city and suburb in this country have the same problems as Detroit. People in the Suburbs love to bash DETROIT and they don't even know what is happening in their own city.In my opinion the Metro DETROIT area is on of the most prejudice areas in the country. I traveled this country from coast to coast prior to my retirement and seen the same problems everywhere in this country.THE PROBLEM IN THIS COUNTRY IS PARENTS. MOST OF THEM TODAY GIVE THEIR KIDS A CELL PHONE ,A COMPUTER, A CAR, and have no idea what their children do on any given day or who their children's friends are BECAUSE THEY DO NOT WANT TO BE PARENTS THEY WANT TO BE COOL PARENTS and live their life through their children.WAKE UP PEOPLE AND LOOK IN THE MIRROR. LIVE IN REALITY NOT FANTASY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Refreshthetree - 12 years ago

Someone in this comment string said Detroit is 85% white. Funny, that was true 15-20 years ago. Since then the black population has exploded, and the white population has left. NOW it is 82% black. Just facts, don't get mad.

  • Jon - 12 years ago

I live in Brooklyn. We don't go farther west than the Hudson River. Getting too close to Detroit.

  • Mojo - 12 years ago

I grew up there in its heyday. What fond memories. But I still go home once a year to visit old family and friends. I always have a blast. There are tons of safe thing to do. Lots of good restaurants, as always. I'm sure Detroit will make a comeback. Location location, location.

  • Canook - 12 years ago

    Simple math
Detroit=95% negros all sorts of crime-everyone on ebt ,snap, obama free cell phones

    Winsdor=95%white. Alot less crime-thriving

    Plain and simple non-racist answer
You people in detroit are dirty filthy animals

  • Kim - 12 years ago

lol To Jon .. Get your facts straight dear. Detroit is NOT 85% white.. BUT lets not place blame on color nor race sweetie.. Crime is everywhere and it comes in all colors.. and to ukant cme, you can now get a concealed weapons permit if you don't have a criminal record here in the state of michigan..

  • Kim - 12 years ago

I am tired of Detroit getting a bad rap all the time. Please they are over rating things a bit here. Sure there are PARTS of Detroit that you could consider unsafe,(to some degree) NOT ALL of Detroit is like this.It is a big city. Every State has a City that has crime not just Detroit.

  • Apotex - 12 years ago

Detroit is a Democrat fantasy. Ruled by them for over 50+ years. You will always get what you vote for. RIP Detroit.

  • Dave - 12 years ago

I've traveled all over the USA and abroad during the course of my business, and Detroit holds the only distinction of causing me to fear as I was driving through on I-75. My car was shot at from some distance away. If the bullet had penetrated my windshield, I would likely have been hit, but fortunately the distance was great enough that the speed was not sufficient to cause it to penetrate. Nevertheless, I had to replace the windshield....Detroit is a basket case among basket cases. The 911 personnel who answered my call were completely nonchalant and didn't even offer to send a squad car out to investigate the incident.

  • soozie - 12 years ago

My voice teacher at Oakland was stabbed in the old Music Hall parking lot, my bosses new Ford Tempo was stolen from guarded underground parking in Grand Circus Park and my hubcaps were stolen in Grand Circus Park at a Metro TImes Christmas party. This was 20 years ago. Since then, I've been to dozens of baseball games, at least five or six jazz festivals, visited many restaurants downtown and I LOVE DETROIT. Maybe it's niavete but I LOVE DETROIT.
If we stop going, the bad people win.

  • Justin Case - 12 years ago

The main problem with Detroit is the same problem that every other problem city in the world has. Darks and "Latins". The 2nd problem is greed and corruption but that is the fault of the citizens. Once America starts to get rid of the political correctness and starts demanding that law makers hold minorities up to civilized standards then we will start to see change. Only willfully delusional people think that there is no difference between the races. Look at Africa, Jamaica, Haiti etc... Look at Mexico and many other central and south American countries. Minorities feel that they do not need to live by civilized rules because they are taught by elders that they are exempt from those rules for endless B.S. reasons.

  • Pat Burns - 12 years ago

Oh come on, what a pack of wusses. What kind of Americans are you? Afraid of a little crime? The police are shouting that only to make their piont and get some hires, but please, if you all are such wusses go over the bridge to Canada and stay there.

  • ukant cme - 12 years ago

If the city would let people own guns to protect themselves, it wouldn't be this way... The way it is, is how they want it or they would change there laws...

  • Guy Average - 12 years ago

Joe says: ..."do you know the police dont pay into social security, they just have their pensions,"...

Joe, is that even legal? On the other hand, since Social Security is broke, they at least have a shot of getting their money back, unlike the rest of us who are given and IOU from the federal government when they rob that Social Security trust fund.

    Sheesh...

  • Stewy - 12 years ago

There are way too many Knee Grows and not enough white people to balance 'em out.

  • joe - 12 years ago

For everyone who says they are not afraid to go to the city, it means the whole city even the inner city, not just downtown where crime is low. And for you who says the unions are taking the city in debt you are sooooo wrong the unions helped the city with millions then the city turned around and stabbed them in the back, do you know the police dont pay into social security, they just have their pensions, so before you bash the police look at all the facts and what they given up already, and if it wasnt for the police you wouldnt even be able to go downtown.

Hey, Guys: I don't want to be mean, but you're a bunch of wusses supreme. My wife and I go to the city [unarmed] all the time, particularly Mid-town and downtown, and everything is always peaceful and the cultural, culinary, sporting, theatre, opera, and social scenes are worthy of any city.
We're off to see the DLECTRICITY - Detroit's Nighttime Exhibition of Art & Light, tonight and then eat and drink at a Midtown cafe. But, you know what? Things are already a little crowded in that area, so, yes, be afraid, be real afraid. Stay home in the suburbs and watch TV. Getting a parking spot is too tough as it is.
    Ha!

  • Rick Ector - 12 years ago

Detroit is dangerous. If you live there, visit, or work there you should be armed and have a Concealed Pistol License. You've been warned.

  • Mike N of fenton - 12 years ago

I'm Latino used to hangout in Detroit a few years back. Used to get my fade and drink down there plus eat some good Latin food. after a few close calls i will not be going down there. I would get a handgun permit, but hell its not worth it you kill a thug and you get called a racist animal. JUSTICE FOR ZIMMERMAN. people used to be polite back in the good ole days why cuz every well respect man carried a peacemaker and didn't get questioned on how he used it! ive seen cocaine sold at the local barbershops, been offered stolen guns and seen shootouts believe me man if you aint from around there dawg dont come around

  • Joey - 12 years ago

This is what happens when animals take over a city.
Yrs ago ,these people came from the south and at least worked.
Now these people just want free cell phones ,ebt and snap.
They drop out and wonder why they cannot get a job let alone pass a drug test.
Go back down south ,at least you people will be warm

  • White Suburbanite - 12 years ago

I am not afraid to go to Detroit. I get valet parking at the gate of Ford Field and walk right up to my private skybox. That's about all the city is good for... I gamble at the casino in Windsor.

  • Eddie - 12 years ago

If you count on police to prevent crime you're kidding yourself.
You must take control of your situation. Your neighborhood. Your family.
Yes, I am calling for "Justice for Zimmerman", people.
Detroit has a corruption problem, and a character problem. Too much government payout, too much union protection, too little accountability. It's produced thugs, drugs and gangs. But that's enough about the mayor and city council. :-)

You must protect what is yours. As for those who find a way to survive without finding work ...well let's just end that right now. You're not taking mine without a fight for your life.
    Justice for Zimmerman.
