I vote Discord! I know he wasn't completely EVIL but he was just so entertaining! Also, I really want him back in season 3, but....am i the only one who wants him to befriend the ponies? I just picture him always messing with them and pulling pranks on them, and im also a fan of dilestia :P lol

  • ... - 11 years ago

Somepony...whatever, you should watch this episode once again. He actually said something. Not said too much, but I think he didn't have to. ( I don't want to argue, I just do not like when people exaggerate something).

  • Somepony That You Used To Know - 11 years ago

... People actually voted for those dragons from "Dragon Quest"? Who the hell even made this poll? "Spike's episode"? *facehoof*

And wtf. The Diamond Dogs, really? ... No.

Now, I can see voting for Flim & Flam or even Diamond Tiara & Silver Spoon, but really? -.- Why would you even list those dragons or the Diamond Dogs? Just... why?

*votes Discord cuz he is the shit*

Btw, Sombra? REALLY? Come on! He didn't even say a word, I don't even think he counts as an antagonist! Princess Luna had a bigger frickin' role than King Sombrero!

  • aibr - 11 years ago

    To MikeDynasty:

If one can use logic and definition to prove who is best antagonist, why we need poll? Maybe because these things are personal opinions.

  • Millennial Dan - 11 years ago

You guys are still confused about Discord. What in the name of all things green makes anyone think he didn't know what he was doing? He was evil. He KNEW what kind of suffering he was putting ponies through, he just didn't care. He's not an idiot or a child, he's an ancient malevolent spirit for goodness' sake.

He destroyed homes, lives, and the happiness of others. It does not get any worse than Discord. Think I'm wrong? Consider this: Sombra merely enslaved the body; Discord enslaved the mind. He changes the very being of ponies, robbing them of their very identity. And in doing so, he also caused them to bring harm to one another. No other villain even comes close to the cruelty of Discord. Stop arguing as if he was just in it to have a party with everyone.

  • RainbowSwag - 11 years ago

@MikeDynasty Duh! Ponyfacts already logicly explained everything. You could've spared us your senseless blah blah blah.

  • Binary - 11 years ago

If you want to debate on who is the best antagonist, take it from the literal perspective.
    It's definition.
Use evidence to support the definition.
Speculation is used as a bias, but must be logical, and others with conflicting favors must be allowed to counter speculate, only if it is more logical.

If you want to debate on who is the best character, use combined logic.
    It's definition.
Use evidence to support the definition.
Speculation is used with strong bias, it is expected that others have conflicting beliefs and it may be discredited as personal preference.
Personal preference can be avoided by observing the variables without bias, then add that which helps your odds as bias. This is creditable, but the conflicting favor must be allowed to add information that dismisses possibility through intrusive logic.
Content of the character can (as by choice) not credited through secondary use. Secondary use is when the plot is based around the character but not directly. Thusly, that which can be so the character is proportional to primary use, or direct plot involvement. (Debatable, again, I am in bias of Sombra, so I use what will help be as long as it is somewhat logical)

FOLLOW THESE SUGGESTIONS AND YOU'LL BE ON YOUR WAY TO A SUCCESSFUL ARGUMENT.

  • Ponyfacts - 11 years ago

Okay people! Time to end this Discord vs. Sombra fan fight!
Let's compare the facts we know about these two.
And with "facts" i'm NOT talking about screen time, voice actor, design etc.

    First let's compare their strength.
Without a doubt King Sombra is powerful. He surpasses Queen Chrysalis when it comes to pure magical strength. (Keep in mind that Chrysalis only gains strength when feeding off love, while Sombra already has enough strength of his own) To overthrow an entire empire and cause fear into the hearts of the crystal ponies even after 1000 years his magic must even be more powerful than Nightmare Moon's. The only one who's magic is even more powerful than that of Sombra, is Discord. Sombra caused fear and unhappiness by enslaving the crystal ponies. Celestia says that before her and Luna stood up to Discord, he ruled equestria in an state of unrest and unhappiness. That means Discord "ruled" ALL of equestria! Not one town, not one empire, but EVERY last part of equestria! Also while Sombra only made the crystal ponies unhappy, Discord made earth ponies, pegasi and unicorns lives miserable. Sombra could take on the form of shadow, while Discord can take on any form and appearance. (Butterflies, Balloons, Windows etc.) Discord even openend a door that only Celestia could open, and made Twilight's magic useless etc. Sombra is still just an evil unicorn, while Discord is the spirit of disharmony. So yeah, Discord is way more powerful than Sombra and the other antagonists we've seen so far. Even though Sombra is powerful enough to be #2, he still is no match for Discord. That means that this round clearly goes to Discord.
    -Sombra 0 : 1 Discord-

Next : "Evil deeds and motives"
Sombra is a tyrant who enslaved the crystal ponies, this is without a doubt an evil deed. He knew he made the crystal ponies lives miserable by enslaving them and he took it for granted. He didn't show any remorse or pity for his slaves. Now to Discord. To put it simply, Discord just wanted to have "fun". He didn't want to enslave or harm the ponies in any way. It was just his idea of "fun" that made the ponies suffer. It is unclear if he just didn't realize the fact that his chaos made the ponies lifes a living hell, or if he simply did not care. Anyway, the conclusion is that Sombra is truely evil because he knew what he was doing to the crystal ponies. While Discord just thought he would bring some fun into the ponies lives, not knowing/caring that just the opposite was the case. So, this round goes to Sombra.
    -Sombra 1 : 1 Discord-

Now the last round : "Defeat"
In the flashback of "The Crystal Empire Part 1" we see Celestia and Luna defeating Sombra the first time. (They are not shown using/wearing the elements of harmony!) He is later defeated by the crystal heart and the positive emotions ( love etc.) of the crystal ponies. It is basicly the same power that defeated Chrysalis before, only way stronger because more ponies are present and participate. (Combine their positive energy/power with the crystal heart you could say) We see Sombra blown away, bursting to pieces not sure if he is dead or just banned from the crystal empire. Discord was first defeated by Celestia and Luna who used the elements of harmony against him. That means it took Celestia's, Luna's and the elements of harmony combined power to defeat him and turn him into stone. His second defeat is again caused by the elements of harmony wielded by the mane 6 this time. That leads us to the following conclusion : "Discord can only be defeated by the elements of harmony and nothing else! While Celestia and Luna defeated/sealed Sombra without the elements power." (Celestia and Luna are NOT wearing the elements of harmony in the flashback when they defeat/seal Sombra! Look it up yourselfs if you don't believe me!) So, with a slight advantage this round goes to Discord.
    -Sombra 1 : 2 Discord-

And the winner is : Discord! (When it comes to being a powerful antagonist)

  • aibr - 11 years ago

    To Phef:

Crysalis had reason to invade Equestria, namely to harvest ponies love for her and her kinds food/source of power.

  • Phef - 11 years ago

Nightmare Moon. Second vote goes to King Sombrero, then Trixie. but I'm voting on their place in the story.

Don't get me wrong, Discord was an AMAZING character, voiced by an AMAZING actor/voice actor, but that's about it. He pops up, get's a one paragraph backstory, and says "Bee Tee Dubs, I'm taking over Equestria now." He's a bad guy for no good reason.

And I LOVE Chrysalis, I REALLY do, but again, she's one of those "bad-guys for no good reason." We barely get any description of what, or why she shows up, other then to do evil. And (though time constraints suck), she played her hand WAY to early to become SUPER interesting, so she plays into the "Oh hey guys, I'm here, and Equestria is mine. Deal with it." Kind of factor.

Sombra is up there because he's at least got a reason to come BACK. Mind, again, he (and NMM) are just there to take over equestria (seems to happen a lot), but at least he's got a reason THIS time. Mind, the first time wasn't really explained much, other then "Mwahahaha, Mine is an evil laugh... Oh, and you're all my slaves."

Nightmare Moon at least HAS a GOOD reason to be BAD. The most fully developed in the show, and even more developed in the fandom, she has a reason for wanting to take over Equestria, TWICE even. It's unfortunate that we might not see how that story went down, or how it all took place, and that we only know that she wasn't respected and out of jealousy and hatred, refused to change from night to day. Though simple, at least it IS a reason for being bitter. Then she comes back and tries to do it again. Sure, a bit of a one track mind, but what would you do after being trapped in the moon for a millennium? Go shopping?

Also, she was the FIRST villain to be introduced to us, before Discord, and before Trixie (god, was there ever really a time before Trixie?). She's what ushered us all into the fandom. And face it, when you saw a snippet, or maybe the scene, where Twilight and NMM are charging each other, you fangasmed a bit. That's when you knew this was going to be something good... ... ...

    ...

Okay, maybe not... But *I* did. But not only that, NMM showed that even those of us that fall to our jealousy, and our hatred, should still garner our friendship... Or... At least our pity and sorrow. But even those wretched within' their own anguish might still be saved, and even brought back into the world anew. Bright eyed and full of wonder at this brave new world that they can now see... And yell at everyone because that's how it used to be...

    ... And...

    ... And...

(TLDR:)Okay, I'm just hamming it up now. But yea, NMM is the only villain that breaks the mold of "Oh, hey guys, I'm evil... Because... Yea... Oh yea, and Equestria is mine." She has a REASON to be evil, and a REASON to be doing what she's doing. Discord, Chrysalis, and most of the other antagonists really can't say that, they're all just evil for evil's sake.

Oh, and Trixie because Trixie... I don't think that needs explanation.

  • Shadowmare - 11 years ago

I'm not suprised that Discord dominates this poll, but only 3952 votes for Chrysalis?!
C'mon bronies, show the Queen some love!

  • Millennial Dan - 11 years ago

I'll say this much; although I have my critiques of how he was handled thus far, I would welcome further information on him in future episodes. Like I said before, he did at least have some potential, now he just needs a little fleshing out.

  • Jaboll252 - 11 years ago

Oh boy, here we go again. Sure Sombra is "uninteresting", that's why we all spend our times disgussing him. I'm soooooo delusional.

Do you, Millennial, even know what cliché means? That was not the case. This way every other villain's design exept Chrysalis is 'cliché' (not really). It's just some people for some reason tend to compare Sombra's design to some of those overpowered ocs. I think they're simply play with those damn ocs too much and see things (and others just jump the bandwagon). To be honest, before Crystal Empire, I didn't even know what "oc" means.

While I can't agree more on lack of develpment (hopes for further appearances), again we go with the "did nothing" nonsense. Sure, scarying ponies so they end up traumatized and unwilling and don't even want to remember him is nothing. He was totally zero threat, that's why Cadance exhaust herself tring to keep hima way. How about rendering Shining Armors magic useless? Hindering Twilight? Hiding Crystal heard behind the set of trials? Oh, and enslaing or cursing entire race is nothing too. Sauron comparison is based on the same "looming threat" roles they played, except that what Sauron did with his army, Sombra did with his own powers, though both kind of from behind the scenes.

Don't get me wrong, I think Discord deserve first place too, but I also do not think Sombra was that bad. I like him most for the Twilight's worst fear scene, the cut on the 'Sombrized' stained glass. Also the scene when Cadance's sheld fails - sky darkens, thunders strike, dark crystals entalgle everything and from darkness emerges his shadowy manifestation "MY CRYZDAL ZLAVES".

  • Millennial Dan - 11 years ago

To you guys who so vehemently defend Sombra, consider the following.

You say he's oh so evil, but no one even knows what his motivation was. He's so ineffectively explained, all we can do is make assumptions about him. Where did he get all his power? Was he corrupted by dark magic, or was that merely a tool he favored? How did a unicorn come to rule over an entirely earth pony population anyway? And if he's such a big deal, why didn't Luna and Celestia take care of him like they did before?

You say he's just like Sauron. Even if that was the case, so what? Sauron wasn't scary, he never even did anything, he was just a big flaming eye on a tower. Without his minions, he'd practically have been a non-threat (at least in the movies). Sombra didn't have any such hordes or supporting characters. All he did was scare ponies and tire out Cadence and make funny faces.

You say that those episodes weren't about him, they were about Twilight. To that I'd like to reply that the reasons for his lack of development are irrelevant; he's still uninteresting, regardless of why they made him that way.

And his design is cliché too. Overall, he had plenty of potential, but he'll never stack up against the others.

Discord, for example, was not only accomplished as the former tyrant of the entirety of Equestria, but we also got to spend some time with him to see how truly cruel he was. He made ponies literally go INSANE. He turned them against one another, and watched laughing as they hurt themselves, their friends, and their home. He's the kind of dude that thrives off the misery of others, living to torment and tempt and corrupt. If you don't think that's deserving of the number one villain spot, well, I just don't know what to tell ya.

  • AzzyFox - 11 years ago

Discord and Queen Chrysalis nearly accomplished their goals. The other antagonists of the series didn't do nearly as much as them.

  • sethsucks - 11 years ago

oh come on this is bitchslap for NMM cause Trixie is higher ...
creating antagonist poll after Trixie episode

    FUCK YOU SETH

  • VV - 11 years ago

    King Sombra and Discord

  • Luna's Loyal Subject - 11 years ago

Well that was expected. Most all of the antagonists are well designed and decently written (save Growly McGloweyes), but Discord is really in a class of his own, pretty much entirely thanks to John De Lancie.

  • SoostheMoos - 11 years ago

I must say, I'm glad Discord is dominating these polls. I had honestly thought he had been all but forgotten after Chrysalis arose.

  • Pinkydash - 11 years ago

Discord, because unlike the other villains where the mane6 were together, he turned friend against friend.

  • solobutterfly - 11 years ago

Trixie is beating Nightmare Moon?! This....I shall not accept. Clearly it should be Discord, Chysallis then Nightmare Moon for top three.

  • solobutterfly - 11 years ago

What the fuck is Ahuizotl anyway

  • galapin - 11 years ago

Wut? No need to be stupidly agressive... This is just the villain with the poorest development I have ever seen, that's why I don't understand why people can reasonably vote for him. But everyone has his own choices, even rude guys.

  • gloriaz - 11 years ago

galapin... your parents made a mistake when they begot you... Discord and Sombra are best villains.

  • Fun1k - 11 years ago

Hey hey hey, stop right there, whining scum! I never watched more than few episodes of Star Trek TNG and i never saw an episode with Q. I voted for Discord, because it's one of the most originals villains, i have honour ever see.
SO STOP SAYING "trekkiez vute fyr dykord, not faer" AND ACCEPT THAT DISCORD IS GREAT VILLIAN EVEN WITHOUT RELATION TO STAR TREK

  • galapin - 11 years ago

Sombra in the list... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA must be a joke (or a mistake).

  • Anzu18 - 11 years ago

I vote for King Sombra. He is pure evil, I love his black magic.

  • aibr - 11 years ago

    >Jaboll252
    This.

  • Jaboll252 - 11 years ago

I would normally vote Discord, but because of all the obnoxious ignorant kids jumping on Sombra hate bandwagon I feel obligated to support him. I understand poiting lack of lines, but everything besides that is utter bullshit.

Through out the Premier he done lots of stuff. Eslaves an empire. Then curses it to wholly vanish. Meet for the first time - blocks Shining Armor's magic. The Crystal Ponies? Brainwashed by him. Cadance? Exhausted by casting a spell preventing HIS return. Even so he still corrupts the city through pice of his horn. The stairs and fear door didn't make themselves. Sombra did it. He showed Twilight and Spike their worst fears, and if not Twilight's exelelnce in magic, they wouldn't find that passage in the first place or endlesly climb that stairs. Even after reaching Crystal Heart Sombra managed to prison Twilight in teleport-proof crystal cage forcing twilight to 'fail' her test for the sake of defeating him.
King Sombra was by far the most competent and least "in your face" MLP villain. Even though I was little dissaponted with lack of lines or backstory, everything beside that was exelent about him.

Looks like bad OC? Oh, please, don't make me laugh. Aside that it's matter of taste,
    This is bad OC: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m53oz0itd61rncbeqo1_1280.png
    This is King Sombra: http://images.wikia.com/mlp/pl/images/f/f0/King_Sombra.png

Dunno, but he looks pretty cool for me. Looks exactly like he suppose to look anyway. A Sauron-ish evil king. H Also, he has normal white eyeballs with red cat-like pupils. Purple and green effect appears whe he uses his dark magic.

Like I said, his only issue was lack of lines provided that had to have any, because he was "looming threat" kind of villain. The one that you don't battle but rather prevent his returning, beacase you can't possible win a battle (because seriously, he could transform himself into city-sized black cloud of doom or grow giant black crystals from earth in an instant). If he would speak, he would probably go with the style of other MLP villains anyway, read brag how supperior he is and throw cliche lines like "Today Canterlot, tomorrow all of Equestria!" (at least Discord was entertaining with it). I'm actually glad Sombra didn't go that way if I think about it.

  • Some Guy - 11 years ago

I gotta love Discord because he reminds me of the Joker in Batman the Dark Knight.
Am I the only one who seriously connects those two characters.
Creeped me out how similar they were in the sense that both had fun showing how foolish people's ideas and plans were, by systematically taking them apart in front of their very eyes.

People pointing out how King Sombre enslaved an empire are correct that is pretty high on the evil list but he did all that for obvious reasons (ie power, wealth, etc etc). But, he had a physical goal while Discord just wanted to "have fun" by causing chaos and destruction everywhere (destruction can be seen when he had a pony sneeze and knockdown a bunch of buildings).

All I could see was the Joker speech of "do I look like a guy with a plan" and "I'm a dog chasing cars" when Discord was talking to Twilight.

TL:DR Discord is like the Joker from Batman the Dark Knight and thats really evil in my eyes

Tell me I'm not the only one who thinks this or if you think theres a flaw in my connection somewhere.

  • Quagspoo - 11 years ago

Chrys is best she sang a song you guys!
    A SONG!

  • Spooky Chan - 11 years ago

    Can't say no to a Q- ever. ;)
John De Lancie makes for a great voice actor. Giving Discord that great kind of loki/trickster vibe that he brought with Q. Alos, Discord is just a fun villain, much like Q was. Both are ass-holes, but never mean much harm...

    ...sorta.

  • TexasUberAlles - 11 years ago

I still do not understand all the breathless fainting over Discord; he was just never that interesting a character. There was a lot of *potential* there, but the actual execution just fell awfully flat. He didn't actively suck or anything, just... meh.

If Discord really is coming back this season, I hope they do more with him than a bunch of glorified Chuck Jones "Animator" gags. Even Sombra's Scary Door was a more effective play on fear and insecurity, and it only had one scene.

  • Lupon - 11 years ago

This one was too easy ;P

  • aibr - 11 years ago

Discord is fun character, but I can't see him as antagonist. He just wanted to have fun and when he "defeated" mane 6, he didn't do anything for them. He let them live their life as they wanted. Wasn't the only reason he screw up with mane 6 that they were going to turn him to stone, again.

Sombra is far superior antagonist, and I don't care what other ponies says about him. Just his present manage to terrify whole empire!

  • stormfront - 11 years ago

honestly discord and Queen Chrysalis tie
Discord wins best motive/personality but design wise Queen Chrysalis wins

  • Giant_Hat - 11 years ago

Discord. Was there ever any doubt?
...Hang on, I think that's someone else's catchphrase.

  • sonofmrpeanut - 11 years ago

Here's how I see it: Discord is the best superpowered antagonist, and Flim & Flam are the best normal antagonists.

  • Laurea - 11 years ago

Don't see why Sombra (and us who vote for him) is getting hated on.

Nightmare Moon was spawned from Luna feeling useless and unloved.
Discord mainly wanted to have fun, and the ponies just happened to get caught up in it as his toys.
Queen Chrysalis sought food for her subjects. An insectoid Celestia, if you will. (And before you say she's nothing like Celestia, please consider the altered perspective.)
King Sombra enslaved an empire - possibly the darkest canon moments of the show.
All others (including Trixie) were too minor to really compare.

IMO, King Sombra was by far the most antagonistic. If it were just the main characters Discord would win, but Sombra willingly put thousands of ponies through hell just to get power .

  • Vidi Kitty - 11 years ago

    Only 1 choice? D:

This should be a top 3 poll, or mark all that apply...

  • Alerhys - 11 years ago

This poll is hardly necessary. The trekkie fangasm over Discord rivals the intensity that teenage girls have for sparkly vampires.

  • MikeDynasty - 11 years ago

So, My vote's Sombra, Chrysalis, Discord, Nightmare Moon, Trixie, Diamond Dogs, Flim Flam, Ahuizotl, Teenage Dragon, Gilda, Iron Will, Diamond Tiara, Blueblood.

  • MikeDynasty - 11 years ago

Antagonism is based on what the character does for level of magnitude, otherwise it would be it's effectiveness with entertainment.
Flim Flam, threatened apple family business and over all lively hood, extra because it's a main character.
Diamond Tiara, a annoyance, but recurring. Limited to mere emotional damage not including Bab Seed.
Discord, screwed all ways of living for high initial ruckus, potential future effects over all, not amazing. Damages main character's coop ability, good for plot development, but only considered as emotional damage.
Sombra, overthrows empire that put's him into possible political power over the entire land as a whole by holding such a strong point of interest. Enslaves populous, corrupts land to make unusable in the far future and destroys a mighty empire for 1000 years after banishment.
Trixie, controls pony ville, minor enslavement, banishes main character.
Nightmare Moon, overthrows political opposition, sensed higher being that opposition having been her sister. Brings danger to all the lives of Equestria and possibly further. Banished with little permanent damage known.
Gilda, bully, emotional annoyance and physical endangering, hurts main character dearly loved for innocence.
Diamond Dogs, kidnaps, enslaves, poorly treats slaves and puts them under strict confinement. High potential future damage and a possible military opposition.
Prince Blueblood, royalty that followed thus customs?
Queen Chrysalis, espionage, torture and manipulative. High military opposition, successful capturing of capital. Puts main character at bad prospect, feeds off the love of other equine populous, considering they do not do it onto themselves makes is a possibly damage task.
Iron Will, puts main character known for innocence at bad prospect and is greedy.
Would love for reply as to why I am wrong, if you disagree on what the poll is about then you can beat me with out a doubt. otherwise, I have little time to rhyme.

  • DarkSideotRainboom - 11 years ago

Voted Discord (obviously) but Chrys was awesome too. NMM and Chrys would've been higher but they weren't (IMO) fleshed out enough. Besides, Discord is Q. F+F weren't really antagonists, just jerks who used superior technology for their own gain. And Sombra? Ha! The Black Knight from Monty Python was a bigger threat.

  • Ashcrexl - 11 years ago

Er, sorry, antagonist contest. However, my comment about Trixie still stands. She's barely more an antagonist than Tom.

  • Ashcrexl - 11 years ago

Discord wins hands down due to the fact that he's the only truly entertaining villain, one I could watch for many many episodes.

Chryssie's got the looks and Diamond Tiara's more vital to the show as a whole, but I never really enjoyed their characters.

I love Trixie, but she's not nearly evil enough to win a villain contest.

  • Iamme - 11 years ago

I would have voted Trixie, but don't see her as an antagonist really. So voted for Crysalis, Discord is a bit too evilllll

  • Diego ARMA - 11 years ago

Sombra is so pathetic that a mare forgiven is more wicked than him. XD.

  • Ian - 11 years ago

Who'd ever want to vote for King Sombra? I mean, all he did was laugh, roar, growl, take over an empire, enslave and traumatize an entire race, leave a legacy of fear, drive Princess Cadence to the brink of starvation and sleep deprivation, subject two beloved characters to their worst nightmares, and force Twilight to swallow her own pride for the sake of defeating him.

  • Millennial Dan - 11 years ago

Sombra is beating Diamond Tiara? Now I KNOW his fans are delusional.

  • infinite scratch - 11 years ago

wait can we rly call trixie a villain? its like calling luna a villain

  • Infinite Scratch - 11 years ago

i had a hard time between discord and chrysalis. but im going with discord cause he actually won...for a day but its still a win. chrysalis was beaten by huey lewis

  • jijonbreaker - 11 years ago

So THAT'S how you spell Ahuizotl...

  • dragonbrony - 11 years ago

Discord is well in the lead. All is right with the brony community.

  • Marvelous TK - 11 years ago

And here we see the Discord in its natural habitat, a popularity conquest. As it stalks its territory, one truly begins to feel it is the master of its domain. The Chrysalis gives a mighty effort to stake its own claim, but to no avail - the Discord barely even notices even as it swats it aside, as it gorges itself on the corpses of dragon bullies and diamond dogs. It seems the Chrysalis will have to wait for the scraps.

  • Blubbershy - 11 years ago

    [x] Discord
    No suprise there!
    Second place for Chrysalis.
    Third for Trixie.
*LOL* Somebody actually voted for Sombra... xD

  • SwaggyShaggy - 11 years ago

    ... Oh okay, he's awesome
