Although Kirby smart is not a proven head coach he IS a proven recruiter...as far as his ties with Alabama I believe that it goes only as far as "just another job"...and lets not forget that will muschamp was also just a d cordinator and look at what he's done with Florida in just 2 years...in summary- lets hire smart

Do not hire Smart. AL fans are commenting that we just want their leftovers! How humiliating !

No I think he would be stupid to leave Alabama the real team of the state not some city named school yall will always be the little sister and if Alabama is losers than yall need to close shop 0-8 in SEC I believe we are headed to the NCG what bowl are yall headed to dont worry though 58 years will come soon and many yall can win 3 titles so think before you speak about loosers because awfulburn is at the very bottom with Kentucky,Vandy and mizzou but I think they had atleast one SEC win GOOD LUCK cuz the barn needs a MIRACLE

Smart interviewing at Auburn says something about Saban - He Ain't Leavin in the forseeable future. I would not be surprised to see his name pop up with TN or Ark as well

Thank you DD! Finally someone with a working brain! The Auburn Family believes in the Creed, and I want a coach that will hold those principles seriously! And concerning Kirby Smart, he is a very highly great assistant, with a lot of success! But it would be more like Auburn hiring Nick Saban..you really need to think about that. You know how deep his loyalty is to Alabama! I can't see him turning off the part of him that is Alabama, and turn on Auburn! That is not a good match!

Don't hang your hat on Kirby leaving Bama anytime soon. After all, he is one of the top salaried coaches in the SEC and has a rapport established with Coach Saban. Coach has stated he will retire from Alabama. If Saban decides to retire after this year at Bama then guess whom would be at the top of the list to replace him. So, Kirby let your conscience be your guide. You have free reign to do what you want and CNS will never step in your way to bettering your career. Good luck on your decision but I for one believe you are one of the best defensive minds in the NCAA.

Out of all the coaches on the search committee, Charlie Strong has head coach experience and successful wins..he coached at Florida for heavens sake!

  • Susan Fulks - 11 years ago

I think it would be a great injustice if Auburn does not hire Charlie Strong! His credentials are way better than Kirby Smart, and Gary Patterson! If I was the AD, Charlie Strong would be the Athletic Department by now! Charlie Strong is exactly what Auburn needs to get back on track!

Auburn needs to hire the best coach available regardless of where the man has coached prior to coming to Auburn. Just think back to all the AU-UGA cross-hiring, and even AU-UA have traded assistants over the years.

Petrino is a proven liar, adulterer, and quitter. Auburn's image outside of the Auburn city limits is that we are willing to do whatever it takes to win games, and hiring Petrino would only serve to solidify this reputation. Let's get a coach the caliber of Jimbo Fisher - a man of integrity and with serious coaching skills - and pay what it takes to get him. If Kirby Smart is that man, then let's go after him.

Auburn is a quality program and has excellent facilities. We have traditionally competed with everyone in recruiting and it is still an excellent opportunity for a good coach.

    War Eagle!

I think that Kirby smart would be a great hire . I think that he would do really well at Auburn. The bama fans will not like it but the man wants to be a coach and if he wants to be there then the Auburn family would love to have him.

kirby is too smart to take the awbun job, he is just doing practice interviews.

Please for the love of god stop interviewing non proven HEAD coaches and assistant coaches. If you this an assistant coach is the best this program is ever going to be then by all means hire a nobody. In sick of losing! Hire someone that can BEAT SABAN!

Way to be racist Robert Wilson! This isn't 1930 anymore! GROW UP

  • Dean Hudson - 11 years ago

I really hope Kirby will stay at Alabama until Saban retires and take over, but I'm sure he'd jump at the Georgia job when it's available. He would be a good hire for Auburn, but I'd hate to see him go

Its high time they hire african american coach am tired of watching 99%of white coach while 75%are black players. I wish boo jackson will do something and participate with hiring. Its not fair for african american players not to be given a shot while they dominate the game of football.

I think Kirby Smart will want to wait on a better opportunity and take what would be considered a step up rather than just taking a lateral move at this time.

Everyone needs to start looking at this situation for what it is. There will not be an established high profile coaching hire for Auburn, that's not saying that we won't get a great coach. Most high profile great coaches are content and if they are doing a good job elsewhere would not want to leave. If you built a program the right way then you wouldn't want to leave because you and your program are set to excel, why go try to rebuild somewhere else no matter what school it is. I understand taking the higher profile job for the assets of the university... Better facilities, larger fanbase, better recruiting areas and so on. But if your in a job that is similar and already have your pieces in place then I just wouldn't see the point. You either see cracks where you are or are just money motivated. I think the most qualified candidates are Kirby Smart, Gus Malzahn, and Charlie Strong. These are candidates that I feel give Auburn a chance at success and are what Auburn needs morally and athletically. If we go the route of Petrino we deserve whatever that brings us! Petrino is what he is, we will get a person that no one can prove has changed, and someone that has a large risk involved with hiring. If all the candidates are looked at everyone will find flaws, that's because none are perfect and each will have their own way of getting things done. We need someone that will restore discipline and give our team strong guidance and leadership. We need someone who's first priority is his players and not just winning, other universities can concentrate on winning first, we need someone that cares about installing Auburn character and virtues into our team and someone they can look up to with respect. It may take time with any hire but personally I would rather wait and it be done the right way then to hire someone who could go out and win 10+ games right off but we still see and hear about players that have serious discipline issues and end up arrested or kicked off the team or any of that type stuff. We need a cohesive unit that will work together toward one goal and a coach that can make that happen.
