In 1997 or 1998 I picked up Drums of Autumn (paperback) in the grocery store several times before I actually bought it. I was intrigued by the story, but wasn't sure I wanted to read such a long book. When I started reading it I realized it was actually the 4th book in a series. It was extremely hard to put it down and go out and buy the first three so I could start at the beginning. Diana does a great job of catching the reader up on the back story, so that you don't have to read the previous books. Once I started on the series the house did not get cleaned, the laundry did not get done, and there was no dinner prepared each evening until I was done. My family knows when I become a recluse it's because I'm reading a Gabaldon book!
