I don't understand how so many people are actually insulted or offended by such a petty thing. The Washington Redskins weren't targeting Native Americans when they decided on a mascot. I mean dont get your panties in a wad. Political correctness is going to be the death of this country.

I was not expecting most people to not find redskins offensive from LA times. As a muscogee person from Oklahoma i guess i should have. I find this frightening and disturbing.

Our nation is in the middle of a financial crisis and we're going to worry about the name of a sports team!? Tax dollars well spent!! Typical politician.....

  • Johnllargo - 11 years ago

It IS ONLY OFFENSIVE to those that need it to be. Get a life! You could be stuck with the T.B. Bucs. {:0(

I am 1/8 Cherokee and do find the term Redskin offensive ... no natives refer to themselves as redskins... the reason being...we don't think it's cool... even some African americans say wudup nigga... you'll never hear... wudup Redman ... or me and my redskins... maybe "natives " ....

  • carter - 11 years ago

If you don't think that Redskins is offensive, think of it this way: most team mascots are animals. The only mascots that are people are things like the cowboys, vikings, pirates, etc. These figures, in history, were fairly gung-ho, aggressive people that make great mascots. On top of that, you don't see many Vikings walking around. Native americans, however, didn't really do much conquering. It seems like a sarcastic joke that they are mascots of teams whose stadiums stand on land stolen from them centuries ago. Another thing: mascots are novelized. It's okay to put a guy in a big, clownish viking costume because, although they were a people group at one time, they don't exist anymore! It's definitely offensive! Not to mention that redskin, if you said it to a Native American, is definitely a racial slur. Common sense, people.

My Great, Great Grandmothers last name was Mudd. She was Cherokee. Blacks call me "White Boy" all the time. Im a Miami Dolphins fan. What could possibly be worse? Pretty soon, we wont be able to watch Football. The players will find it offensive to being watched. Live and Let Live. There is only two types of business, my business, and none of my business.

  • Tommy Boy - 11 years ago

I don't think any rioting has resulted from the REDSKINS name?

  • Savage1 - 11 years ago

Redskin is laughable, but if someone where to say a prairie nigger then I'd whoop some ass

  • j burke - 11 years ago

IO, you need to slap yourself silly. Spear chucker, wet backs, and fence jumper don't refer to Indians. Next time laugh when someone calls you that, or turn around and look for who they are really talking to. The rest of you crybabies need to STFU. I'm an OSU Buckeye fan. I wear two nuts on my shirts with pride. You can squeeze, juggle, spit on, and cuddle my nuts without offending me. I'd rather have a solemn warrior, stalwart Viking, or a patriot as a logo, but I'm stuck with nuts.

I don't need to be a woman to care about woman's rights. I don't have to be African American to care about their rights. Native American is no different. Seriously... If you think Redskin is ok and not offensive them tell me... would there be an equal debate today had the team been originally called the Washington Niggers??? The answer is "no". Why? Because if would be already been changed ages ago. Somehow one racial slur is wrong but this one everybody is ok with many people. I don't get it...

  • Savage1 - 11 years ago

I'm a full blooded Navajo and I don't think it's offensive. It's a football team, and if redskins is a symbol of kickin ass then I'm for it. Most of these people who whine are half breeds or an eighth that know nothing of being a native american

  • dj 58 - 11 years ago

If that's the way they feel about it, maybe we should change the name to the Maryland REDSKINS. Washington can kiss our redskin asses.

  • Jack - 11 years ago

I am also blackfoot indian and believe that if you cant laugh at this stuff you should probably find another hobby. Most of the people who are offended are probably not even native and are just looking for the next thing to complain about.

  • ConservativeAtheist - 11 years ago

How this name hasnt been changed already is a mystery to me. Its derogatory plain and simple. If they were called the Washington Darkies this would have already been solved. Funny though because the first settlers of America did much worse to the natives of this land than what was done to slaves.

  • Bill STFU - 11 years ago

There is no other "card" to talk about Bill. This is a racial issue. So please grow up and and realize how rediculous you sound.

  • BravesBill - 11 years ago

IO tries to play the race card! Perfect example of whining. Poor little baby...

  • Bill Monk - 11 years ago

What's the problem? Why is everyone so sensitive?I just don't understand why we can't be grown-ups about this. We have become a nation of whiners.

  • RG - 11 years ago

We have more important issues to deal with like the homeless, economy, debt crisis. Etc... Go to counseling if it offends you. It's been like this for 50 yrs at least .

  • Jimmy - 11 years ago

I've got a great name. Their full name should be the Washington DC Corrupt Politicians, or Corruption, for short.

  • Tom Peck - 11 years ago

The term Redskin is historical to our country and Native American Indians believe so also.

  • john c - 11 years ago

What i find offensive is allowing the Giants and Jets to use the name New York. Both teams play in New Jersey, and are a bunch of wanna be's.

  • Bill S - 11 years ago

At least their logo is respectful, unlike the Cleveland Indians' or the similarly cartoony Stanford Indians of yore (changed to the color Cardinal in 1972, although the student body voted for Robber Barons, which would have been a fitting twist on the WASP Establishment). Speaking of which, 41 years later and this debate still goes on? Considering the historical treatment of Redskins by Washington DC, the moniker seems, at best, ironic. From a personal standpoint, I wouldn't be very comfortable with the Hollywood Jews or the New York Bignoses.

  • ed mclane - 11 years ago

    Think redskins belong in dc

  • IO - 11 years ago

I'm gonna guess that the majority of you that do not find it offensive are Caucasian, with the exception of a few. Do you know what it feels like to be racially profiled on a regular basis? I'm only 18 and have been called a spear chucker, a wet back, a fence jumper, a redskin, and many more. I go to a school where 98% of the 1,000+ students are white. I am Native American, Mexican, and White. Our school mascot is the Northmen, a Native American head. Just the other day someone told me that they were honoring me because they had the Northmen on whatever they were wearing. Another kid saw a teepee, took a picture of it, and sent it to me asking me if it was my home. When I wear my Minnetonka's I get asked if I made them. People tell me it's not fair that I get my tuition paid for when I go to college. What's not fair is that we had to fight to get where we are today. What's not fair is that Columbus is praised for "discovering" America, when my ancestors had been here for 100's of years before. What isn't fair is the European's coming over and killing off so many of our ancestors with wars, massacres, and disease.

So please, the next time you say things like this aren't offensive, rethink, open your mind, and maybe be even a little more sensitive.

  • Clayton Gumbley - 11 years ago

Ok let's call them the Washington whites everyone is so sensitive

  • craig - 11 years ago

the mayor should be thinking about the money the team would bring dc on game weekends.he should welcome the redskins with open arms.

  • Jeff - 11 years ago

Anyone who votes "No" is merely, and perhaps unwittingly, insensitive. You'd have to actually live daily with racial negativity...to have it directly and regularly impact your life...to understand. Most white people do not confront it, so they just don't understand, or care. The name "Hawgs," which is already massively popular in D.C., is a great alternative.

  • DC - 11 years ago

Completely agree ST. Other teams names such as Vikings, Patriots or even Florida State Seminoles are all names that represent groups of people...sure. But none of them are racial slurs. To compare using those examples is complete nonsense!

  • ST - 11 years ago

For us Native Americans to be called a redskin is offensive. Affiliate the team with a local tribe and no one would have a problem. Of course the white privileged wouldn't understand this.

  • Susan S., Bloomington, MN - 11 years ago

I think the heritage of the native indian is getting a bad rap, by wanting to take away their representation of what the Logo is representing. To take it away one is also taking the high REPECT and HONOR they are deserving of.
This logo is a representative and a symbol of symbol ot Pride, Honor and great Courage.
If this is politically incorrect, think of all of the other cultures that are represented in the NFL.
My heritage comes from Sweden, and Norway and I love my Vikings. As long as there is respect and honor for any culture within the NFL names, Washington!. Just leave it alone. I think America and all the political representatives who are" stirring the pot" and looking for somthing that tamper with yet another right from us.. The freedon of "expression".
In my opinion, leave things alone. There is politics already within the NFL, Let the people
speak and make their own choice, Dont make the choice for them. Have they ever thought of"let the majority rule"? After all this is one game that is for the people. Since the beginning of Redskins participation in the NFL there has been no problems, with the display of their Logo, why start now.
The Redskins represent Loyalty, Strength and being a Warrior, which is exactly what this great Culture stands for,and the Redskins require to play the game of football. The old saying "if it isnt broken, dont mess with it." Leave the Redskins logo ALONE.

  • DC - 11 years ago

If the Redskins are not an offensive name then lets rename the NY Jets to the NY Niggers. Wait, we can't do that?? Why not? Racism is racism! Period

  • Henri Gaither - 11 years ago

I would be pissed if they were called the Washington Blacks or Washington Negro's. So I understand the Indians point!

  • zeke0318 - 11 years ago

I agree BP, I'm sure the Mayor has other things he should be dealing with. I didn't realize "Redskins" was a nickname?! What are they really called? And has anybody ask the cardinals, blue jays, saints or cowboys how they feel? Maybe the mayor should be thankful he hasn't run the team father out of town...yet.
I can't believe that 20% of you really are offended by this, why?

  • Pauline - 11 years ago

I also am native american of the blackfoot tribe. I do not find that offensive and think they are just making a mountain out of a mole hill. Leave them alone!!!!!!!

  • BP - 11 years ago

I think the Mayor of DC should stick to what he knows best, lieing and cheating, aka politics. Any fan of the Washington REDSKINS will tell you that they take pride in the team name and logo in all regards and certainly don't say it in a derogatory manner. The name and logo are symbols of Pride, Respect and Honor!

If the Redskins are politically incorrect then some consideration should be given to changing the nicknames of ALL teams whose nicknames are about people, ie the Patriots, Buccaneers, Yankees, etc before it offends someone!

  • S CC - 11 years ago

I am Native American of Apache blood in AZ. I personally do not take offense to sports teams using Native American themes as logos or names. I take great pride in knowing that my heritage is being represented in front of millons of people.

The Washington Redskins are my favorite football team and I proudly wear all their apparel with no shame. I especially like the Indian face as the logo.

Too bad they are no longer in the play-offs. Get well RGIII!!!!
