Well, as I think many, I was playing TF2, saw some pony spray, and then I saw a couple of episodes just to be curious....

Then I saw that it was awsome, and became a brony.

  • EdwinShy - 11 years ago

I started watching the show in October 2011 just when Season 2 started and almost a year since my stepfather, Robert Shy who passed away on November 26th,2010 I finally went on YouTube to watch the first 2 episodes since I've seen alot of great reviews and fanart of the show after watching the first two episodes I joined the herd and I've been living somewhat better then I was after my stepfather's passing.

I've been drawing more, being more open (I'm a shy person and not because of my last name >.> ) I got to say Friendship is Magic is one of a few great animated shows out there and is the only one that made me as happy as I was when my stepfather was still alive before he died of cancer if I could I would thank literally everyone who works on the show especially Lauren Faust -well I could thank her on deviantART but I'm not sure what to say to her since she is one of the animation giants who created/worked on very popular cartoons like The Powerpuff Girls and Fosters (which both made my childhood great) but one of these days I will thank her for working on FiM which in turn helped me be strong and go on in life.-

ZettaPT, or it may be that EQD isn't exactly accessible to people new to the fandom that don't have brony friends. It took me a while until I found it and that was because of a mention on a Membase post.

  • BoxedSurprise - 11 years ago

Right around March of 2012, kinda wish I knew sooner though, the show and the fandom have been a blast since then!

  • Royal Brisk - 11 years ago

I've watched my little pony from G1 so 1984-5. Granted I was around 4 years old at the time but still that was when I first started watching it. Followed it thru G2 and into G3 but really kinda stopped there until FiM was announced. I figured that I'd get my little sister to watch it and viewed the first episodes with her and have been watching since.

  • Cyanide - 11 years ago

One day, I was playing Team Fortress 2, and then ... you probably know how the rest of the story goes.

Luke Allen... that name rings a bell...
Oh yeah, that fat, balding dork from the Wired article!

Fall 2010, I had just lost a job that I would now describe as fitting my "Cutie Mark" perfectly. With the economy where it was (and still is), I couldn't see any open jobs that would match my skills at document scanning and printing things the right way the first time. Depressed, I moped about on 4chan, mostly frequenting the tabletop games and Pokemon boards. In November, I ran across the Pony General in /co/, discovered that the show was airing right then, and tuned in to Applebuck Season just in time to miss the cold open. After that hair-raising stampede, and the sleep deprivation humor that followed, I was hooked. I was in the thread when Winter Wrap-Up leaked, I was there when Cupcakes was posted, and I was there for the February bans.

The show revitalized me, and gave me the initiative I needed to finish my two-year degree. While taking a Journalism course for a Communication credit, I wrote a faux news story about the fandom. It was the most interesting story of the entire class, and it made me wonder if this story had legs.

In an attempt to gain more fans for FiM, and possibly obtain future seasons of this amazing, incredible show, I immediately tipped off Wired Magazine. Angela Watercutter interviewed me via email, and the resulting positive story, published electronically in June 2011, brought both bronies and Equestria Daily to the geek consciousness. The journalistic hunger for "singularity" (that which is mind-bogglingly weird) accelerated the news cycle, and ended with Bill Clinton being asked about Krastos the Glue-Maker.

I am now a paid public speaker on autism-related issues, focusing on facilitating understanding between neurotypical and autistic minds. And if it weren't for these horses, I wouldn't have spent that semester in college.

Middle of 2011. Word spread through forums that the equines had arrived.

  • Peanut Crunch - 11 years ago

After plenty of talk about the show on the 3DS Forums*, come May when finals ended (I'll consider that Mid-2011) I decided to see what all the fuss was about. I guess this makes me a moderate, according to the recent documentary definition. I got a bit sidetracked by E3, but I was surprisingly satisfied with what I had seen. My general policy is to give a show one season to prove itself, and MLP was no exception. Once I went up to San Francisco for the BASOTI summer vocal program I spent nights alternating between episodes of MLP and Adventure Time, which I had also just gotten into. When I was caught up with AT, I had to admit to myself I was enjoying MLP enough to finish the season without using a more "appropriate" cartoon as an alibi.

Cut to the evening of July 7th, 2011 in the sublet apartment room I was staying in. I had just finished "Party of One" (I wanted to see it because the thumbnail was AJ doing her awkward smile) and "The Best Night Ever." I finish the season, and I finally came to the conclusion that I liked the show. After breaking into hysterics for several minutes, my next decision was to talk with the other fans on 3DS Forums. They led me to pages like Everypony Radio and EQD. Within the week, I was listening to Bronyville, and by the end of the month I was working for SoCal Bronies. That was also the same month I typed up a Table of Contents for a certain Pony Anthology type video. Yep, I definitely dove head-first into this thing. XD Oh, and my first meetup was two months later the day "Return of Harmony Pt. 2" premiered. As you can imagine, spirits were quite high.

I'd also like to thank EnjoyOopslol for doing a PMV of "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance" by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. That was the moment when I knew this community was worth getting involved in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNEJDDpRr0U

    * Trivia: The MLP Thread there was the start of MLP Forums! Yes, the one that hosts new episode livestreams.

  • CHunter - 11 years ago

I started watching MLP:FiM in the middle of 2011 in July.

After unexpectedly bumping into numerous fan-art pieces of pony art on deviantART, I took the time to watch an episode or two (starting from the beginning) on Youtube and see why this cartoon was so popular. I felt... anxious at first, because normally I don't watch cartoons mainly targeted towards... little girls. After watching the first episode, I thought "That... was actually pretty good!" That's when I started zooming from episode to episode, from "Applebuck Season", to "Fall Weather Friends", and to, my favorite, "Feeling Pinkie Keen" (not in one sitting of course ;) ). I never seen a cartoon animated like this before, its cute, and the characters have a lot of personality!

Today, I still watch the show, and I'm looking forward to the next episode (though I still feel awkward about it!)

  • applebeans - 11 years ago

    since it originally aired ha

  • Otto - 11 years ago

First week of March 2012, around when "It's About Time" came out.

  • Col. Kusak - 11 years ago

So the doomsayers were right? The fandom is DYING!! XD

    :3

  • Nopony in Particular - 11 years ago

I first watched the show in May of '11. I was hooked on the show but didn't know much about 'bronies' at the time. In July, I stumbled upon Equestria Daily and the rest is history.

  • ZettaPT - 11 years ago

Well, it looks clear enough to me that the pony fashion is slowly decreasing.
That, or all the new bronies don't check Equestria Daily and don't participate in polls.
    I am now sad.

  • Un Cable - 11 years ago

remember qhen I started watching some short scenes from "kyrospawn" videos. The first episode I watched was Party of One ^^

  • Dan - 11 years ago

I can't remember exactly when I first started watching the show. I am pretty sure it was the last week of December 2011. Between Christmas and New Years.

I think when I went to the New Years party last year, I was thinking "don't talk about pony". But then again I may have been under the influence of different substances.

  • Tapkomet - 11 years ago

So wait, roughly twice less people joined in 2012 than in 2011? Well, that's definitely not cool. What's wrong?
For me it was really early 2012, like 6th - 9th of January. Saw some mentions on a random website, went to Youtube, watched the first episode, never looked back.

  • Pristine - 11 years ago

1986/1987..? Since I've collected MLP since G1 and have always followed news about it, I was very eager to see the new generation/re-imagining, especially after seeing Faust's original drawings, so I watched the premier of MLP:FiM and have seen every episode since.

  • thesecret1 - 11 years ago

August of 2012 – the best thing that came out of following an internet meme ever!

  • Fun1k - 11 years ago

    Afternoon of 19th February 2012

  • Ashcrexl - 11 years ago

    Late 2003. G3 motherfuckers!

Nah, kidding. Early 2011, when the word began to spread and the curiosity began to overwhelm.

  • TexasUberAlles - 11 years ago

Towards the middle of Season 1 someone showed my wife the video of Art Of The Dress, and her former-commercial-artist self was insta-hooked. I had planned to check it out at some point because of Lauren and Tara, but she demanded I sit down and watch all the episodes as they repeated post-S1, so I was hooked in time to party hard for the S2 opener.

Ponies are pretty much all I've drawn since then. >_

  • makoncrayley - 11 years ago

Early 2011, around March. I think it was on the Monday before Over a Barrel aired. I was sick that night and I decided to give the show a watch after seeing stuff on Memebase, and I did not regret that decision.

  • Magiphart - 11 years ago

March 27th or 28th 2012. I watched because someone who helped me learn rng abuse on smogon had Spike as his avitar. I don't know how I knew Spike was from Mlp though...

  • BadDPS - 11 years ago

Feburary 2011. Found the article on knowyourmeme.com and thought it was a parody of the 80's cartoon at first. Just for the hell of it I began watching it. Without knowing of any adult following of the show I got hooked from the first episode. The rest is history.

  • ArrJaySketch - 11 years ago

I tweeted about pony on October 11, 2010. https://twitter.com/ArrJaySketch/statuses/27024025719?tw_i=27024025719&tw_e=permalink&tw_p=archive (the day after it aired). I think I watched it on PensivePine's channel. :)

Hehe, I said "Plot" in my tweet.

I didn't realize there was a community/fandom for it until March of 2011, though. I do remember having a lot of fun watching streams of new Season 1 episodes with other bronies. That was ridiculously fun.

(Oh, and people have been over-analyzing episodes since the very beginning. There have also been a lot of people fearing the show would end even during Season 1. Back then, we had no idea how well it was doing. We feared it would get canceled before the season would even end. Oh, how very *cute* that seems now. :) )

  • Drifter808 - 11 years ago

August 2011, got bored during the Summer, heard about the show, watched the entire first season in a few days.

  • Daniel "ninonybox" Reinert - 11 years ago

I was in early 2011, right after the first season ended. Feels good to be an Elder Brony of sorts.

  • Isky - 11 years ago

Summer of 2012. Was very curious to see why some of my friends were into the show. Very skeptical at first. Had no idea there was a huge fandom for it until after having watched the first episode. Watched seasons 1 & 2 within 4 days. No regrets.

  • dragonbrony - 11 years ago

October of 2011, about 1 year after the show first aired.

  • TheEvilTater - 11 years ago

Early September 2011. Immediately before season 2.

  • sandal - 11 years ago

i heard about it early on, late 2010/early 2011
i watched my first episode around mid 2011
i started watching regularly and became a brony around late 2011/early 2012

  • Groudon199 - 11 years ago

Early 2012. Was considering watching it in December '11 when I started seeing pony images on sites I visit, and I finally gave in on the 4th of January. After finishing the first season, I started season 2 a few weeks later, getting caught up on the day of the cider episode.

  • Power Arc - 11 years ago

If this distribution keeps up, then all of our projections for the brony population are horribly wrong...

  • Shaggy - 11 years ago

Late 2011. I actually have no idea how I found out aout the mlp phenomenon, just that I became obsessed shortly after watching the first few episodes. The one that really really got me hooked was Dragonshy!

  • Serge Night - 11 years ago

Mid 2011, at the end of the 1st season, thanks to VG Cats.

  • Jake Well (aka TheCrazybunny56) - 11 years ago

I started watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic...when it premiered in October 10th, 2010! Though I only saw the intro before my brother came in and changed the channel.

I didn't saw episodes 1&2 but saw 2/3rds (after the first black-out with the others arguing over the ticket, Twilight Sparkle saying QUIET and Pinkie Pie's famous "Oatmal, are you cra?!..." line!) I loved the episode including the awesome Benny Hill song parody hehe!

Though I stopped watching the episodes after seeing that (I forgotten all about the show). Fast foward to December 1st, 2010 I went to 4chan's /co/ (for some threads I wanted to check out) and the first thread was an My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic thread with the exact words saying "2 days till the sleepover episode!" with an picture of Dashie's "SO AWESOME /)^3^(\" face. I was...kinda surprised to see the thread on the front page and I went in and read it. When I read that the creator...was none other than LAUREN FAUST!!!...I...jumped in so much joy!!!

I LOVE HER WORK and known about her awesome work on my child-hood favorite cartoons such as The Powerpuff Girls, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and has also worked on the amazing animated movie "Iron Giant". Plus she's wife to Craig McCracken who created the Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary friends! Ever since I learned about it I watched the show even more, recording and watching my first fully-watched episode "Look before you sleep" which I enjoyed a lot!

Later on I visited the MLP General threads and read all about the awesome pony stuff, learned about Derpy Hooves and...when I went into an random livestream at midnight...learned the word Brony (along with other bronies watching the livestream) and well as I was leaving I left with an smile on my face and became a brony =D and proud still to this day hehe!

The next episode though, Briddle Gossip (the introduction of Zecora) was the one episode that sealed the deal for my love to MLP-FiM (Flutterguy and Zecora FTW! Also applebloom ftw!) and convinced myself to be an fully-fledged brony (aka a brony and proud!).

Eeyup! That's my piece of history of learning and watching ponies and becoming a brony!=D

Thank y'all for reading this as well, I love you all and brohoofs to you too! /)
    Hugs as well!

    Y'all rock, woohoo~
