Derpy shows the best and worst of the fandom:
The best: Our lovely little connection with the show staff
The worst: DEFCON-5 shitstorm when she gets "censored"
I noticed Meghan and Amy were wearing Derpy shirts at Las Pegasus, and Amy even created a little tune for our little gray mare. Maybe we haven't seen the last of her yet.
Ah Derpy...oh so many memories of you going way back to December 2010 as I first found out about you and love you to this day. I have fond memories of her...she was an character formed by us bronies, the very fandom that grew into something more...it was amazing to see that the staff of MLP-FiM recognized our lil love for the grey blonde-haired pegesus pony and decided to add her with her iconic "derp eyes" in Feeling Pinkie Keen. Never forget...never forget indeed.
Fast foward an year later and she appears in the episode "The Last Roundup" and not only is the name "Derpy" spoken by Dashie but she talked too! It was an golden moment of MLP-FiM. Unfortunely some found her offensive and well Hasbro had no choice but to censor her and things got out of hand...yeah it was an crazy time back than. Still that doesn't mean Derpy is gone for ever, she's still here and even if she was censored...she was still in our hearts =D
Nice to see she still appears as an "Where's Waldo" background pony in the show...recently appearing the season 3 finale (which was very nice indeed!).
Just so everypony knows...everypony is the best pony! As such Derpy is the best pony but isn't the only pony who is as each pony is the best in their own way...to each their own.
As I love Derpy, I choose best pony in the poll! Though still to me I love everypony exactly!
I can understand y'all who don't like her...for good reasons that is. It's totally okay indeed, just understand that those who do like her...like her (just how we like the mane 6, CMC, villans, background ponies, etc).

Not THE best pony (Cheerilee is best pony), but she ranks among the elite.
I like her because she's like a hi-five to the fans whenever she's onscreen. As far as fanon about her goes, I hate it. All of it. Sorry.
I'll admit my opinion of her is kinda... "meh". I went for "fun, but nothing special" because I do like the easter-egg nature of watching for her to show up but she's not even my favourite background pony, and I am one of those fans who focuses on the Mane Six, Spike, the Princesses et al well before I get to the background ponies.... generally anyway. I prefer looking out for Doctor Whooves and Lyra and Bon Bon more than Derpy.
Welp. I put best pony. Not because I actually think she is the best of all characters, but rather out of excitement that they started putting her back in the show, given her multiple appearances in the S3 finale.
She's fun in a symbolic point of view and it's a fun easter egg in the episodes but otherwise I don't think she's all that interesting.

I don't mind Derpy, I don't see her as offensive, but I think she gets way too much attention.
Her fans talk as if she's the main character of MLP:FIM. When I saw that she showed up in the season finale, I'm not going to lie, I didn't care. Yes she was gone for a few episodes, but honestly, it's just a background pony, I really don't pay attention to them when watching an episode.
For me, she's my favorite background pony and is my 4th favorite overall (behind Twilight, Rainbow, and Fluttershy).
To me, Derpy is our fandom's most important pony. She's a personification of the friendship between the fanbase and the showrunners, and it could also be argued that she marked the start of our tradition of fanonizing background ponies. She's not just any pony, she's OUR pony.
3rd best pony after Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy.
Derpy is my favourite bgpony. And within ALL the ponies, she's right behind Princess Luna and Pinkie ;]

I would have said, "fun, but nothing special," not long ago, but the fan content has pushed her into "my top tier of ponies." And I don't even read fanfics! That's all from fan-made comics and music (I'm looking at you, Forest Rain!!)
Derpy is within my top 3 when it comes to background ponies, but i like Luna and Lyra a tiny bit more.
I like Derpy, she's one of my fave background characters. Though some of the reactions that spawned from the whole Last Roundup controversy was ridiculous, fandom mascot or no.
Voted Derpy is fun, but nothing special. I like the background ponies, but they're just that- background ponies. I save most of my love for the main characters.
I like the Ditsy Doo better. Good pony, however I do have another view of her in my head that differs from the rest of the fanon so, I tend to disagree with people now and again.
I love Derpy, but her fans are by far some of the biggest drama queens outside the furry fandom. I swear, they change her voice and we get 30 minute cry videos to "show Hasbro just how much they have hurt us".
So, Derpy = Yes, Derpy Fans = No.
Well, Derpy is an awesome character by a large stretch, so I like her even despite the over-enthusiasts. I mean, the spam was annoying, yes, but that doesn't make me like the character any less :/. As a finishing note, I am beyond glad she made her reappearances in Magical Mystery Cure.

While Derpy may not be my favorite of the fandom's top background ponies, I was far more excited than I thought I would be to see her return in the season finale. She, along with many of the others that the fandom has had an inarguable hand in 'creating', will always hold a special place in my heart.
Lyra will always be best background pony in my opinion, but Derpy definitely claims a spot in my top ten.
Totally agree with SpeedBoost. Everyone being all flankhurt about Derpy being cut from the show and spamming her everywhere has gotten me to really hate her.
