Going After RGIII
RGIII shouldn’t be on the field if he’s not healthy enough to play, and the Eagles have every right to tackle him hard—as long as they obey the rules. At the same time, it would be unethical for the Eagles to intentionally cause further injury.
This is football and knocking the other team’s players out of the game is a legitimate goal. Even if it’s an illegal hit, the Eagles are free to trade a penalty for a better chance to win the game.
Injuries are part of football, but the referees should be especially alert for illegal hits and impose fines and suspensions if they suspect an intentional effort to injure RGIII’s knee.
The game of football is unethical for just this reason. Like boxing, it is inherently violent but with fewer protections and more permanent brain injuries and other physical disabilities. A major overhaul of rules to protect players is needed.
