This reminds me of that old cliche, when you keep doing the same thing but expect a different output - that's the definition of insanity! People cling to old, outdated practices because they want to believe they'll work, despite all the evidence to the contrary. And I think there's a comfort level in repeating doomed behavioural patterns, just because they're familiar. What would we do if suddenly, we became successful? Goodness! People might expect that sort of thing all the time. And so on.
