Can you publish your thesis elsewhere verbatim if it's already online?

I voted "no" primarily because of the way the question was phrased. I would say that if the parts were properly attributed, then said parts can be published elsewhere.

I am also reminded of a colleague who was in the process of completing his dissertation while we were publishing some research notes. The research we were doing was relevant to his dissertation and I was encouraging him to finish the dissertation. However, his adviser was strongly encouraging him to publish the results and then complete the dissertation. (By the way, he was getting the doctorate at a university in Australia so the process may have been slightly different).

This illustrates a fundamental problem with "publishing" all theses or dissertations online. To excel in a scientific career (and I would assume others), students must be able to publish their results in the peer reviewed literature. If "publishing" with a dissertation warehouse precludes that, then we must find a way to prevent this for as long as possible to allow students the opportunity to publish their data in acknowledged sources within the field. That said, rarely is a dissertation or thesis as such suitable for publication without editing.

No Thesis would ever be published "verbatim"; Theses have WAY too many details and it is always necessary to pare it down to make it be publishable. Theses, after all, are not peer reviewed publications.
At most, a Thesis may be referenced in a real publication.
