Did your school have AC?

I am starting my 39th year as an educator. When I first started, we had no air conditioning. When it was hot like this, the kids couldn't concentrate and neither could the teachers. Many times at the front of the room I almost felt like I was going to pass out it was so hot. The district I am in has had air conditioning for many years and the kids do SO MUCH BETTER! When I was a child we didn't have air conditioning, but like Marsha said, we also didn't start school until after Labor Day. When schools are starting earlier and earlier (the Kansas City district north of us started Aug. 12!!!) if we want our kids to be able to learn, we are going to have to provide them with AC. Would you work in an office with no AC?

We didn't have A/C until 10th grade, but we started school after Labor Day. If you are going to start school in mid-August you should have A/C. We also didn't have inservice or early dismissal days. I remember only 2-3 snow days in all of my K-12 years. We went to school come Hell or High Water and we walked both ways. No buses and Mom didn't have a car. Of course no one was ever abducted and raped and the poor teachers did alot of work off the clock and at home. It is too hot to be closed up in a school with no A/C. I think early dismissal is the way to go.

I grew up and still live in Texas. No air conditioning in any of the schools I went to. It was so hot and humid that when I stood up, my clothes were stuck to the desk and I basically had to peel them away from the desk.
