    luna is best background pony!

I actually thought the Nightmare Rarity arc was alright. I admit that it wasn't the best, but to say it's the worst thing ever, is stretching it (in my opinion).

What I liked: Spike was actually the center of attention in this story. He wasn't overshadowed by the element bearers, he was pretty strong willed, and never gave up. It was awesome how he fought the nightmare forces illusions, and didn't fall for their tricks.

Luna was pretty prominent in the story. It was nice to see that she went with the others to fight back. And it is realistic to see her upset, to feel guilty, and somewhat weak in front of the forces. And in the final issue, she was pretty awesome, when she got her swirly hair back, and helped the army.

I'm a bit of a sparity fan myself, so the shipping parts were cute to see.

What I didn't like: We don't really get much of a backstory as to why Rarity is afraid of being no longer needed. Her generosity no longer appreciated. It was somewhat shown in suited for sucess, but other than that, we never really see why this is her fear. With luna, we understand why she resented her sister. No one appreciated her nights.

The ending was rushed. And we really didn't see much after rarity turned back. It's just "she's back to normal, the end!"

So is this the worst arc? I say no. It was pretty darn good, up to the ending. I would give it a 7/10. It was readable, but not as good as the others.

I voted for the Chryssi arc, but I admit, I have not actually read the Big Mac arc. But I only voted Chryssi because the best arc was missing (which is, of course, Spike vs. Giant Cockatrices).

  • Air - 11 years ago

...But I guess that's the downside of fandoms, there will always be someone complaining about something.

  • Air - 11 years ago

Wow, it's like we're not allowed to have opinions here. This is about opinion, NOT fact, and there is no wrong opinion. If you want to try finding out which is the best, hire a critic(a real one) or something.

I can't believe how many people are saying the Nightmare Rarity arc was worst. I disliked it on my first read, but after rereading all of them recently, it's become my favorite. Storywise, it develops the characters more than any other arc. Spike's love for Rarity is tested, Rarity's insecurities are exposed and then dealt with, and Luna's vastly different depictions between Season 1 and 2 are reconciled brilliantly.
It's the most emotionally resonant of the comics so far, giving me that warm fuzzy feeling I get from watching a particularly well-crafted episode of the show (such as The Best Night Ever, The Return of Harmony, Ponyville Confidential, or Magical Mystery Cure).

Compared to the Nightmare Rarity arc, The Return of Queen Chrysalis feels formulaic (although still excellent in its own right). And while Zen and the Art of Gazebo Repair is funny, clever, and beautifully illustrated, its singular focus on Big McIntosh means that he's the only character who truly gets a chance to shine. The Nightmare Rarity arc goes farther simply by daring to do something considerably more difficult than the others: adding more depth to thoroughly established characters, rather than putting them on a standard adventure (Return of Queen Chrysalis) or adding depth to underdeveloped characters (ZatAoGR)

The worst comic is winning? Seriously? The ending was rushed to all hell and there was generally not much content to it.

    ...
    WTF.
The results of this poll should be backwards.

  • Jackos - 11 years ago

Why is the incomplete arc in first place? I actually liked the Nightmare Rarity arc but not as much as the others since the ending was very rushed, heck a good bunch of panels from issue #8 got cut, hence why I'm calling it "incomplete". Return of Chrysalis I can understand because of the great humor (haven't finished Big Mac's because my country gets everything late so can't talk about that one yet).

Hey guys, don't forget that when you post your opinion on the internet, no one cares.

  • Motion Paradox - 11 years ago

Actually, I agree with the poll. Though I see the Nightmare Rarity arc as being more Rarity's story than Luna's, true she had less screen time than Luna did but the story did still focus on her and her issues (though I could be biased since I have a similar insecurity making this arc a bit special to me)

I agree, the other two are nice (though I feel Big Macintosh's arc, has a smaller scale since it's a slice of life story and only has half as many chapters) but I really enjoyed the Nightmare Rarity arc the most.

As for why Luna is so popular I think there are a number of reasons the first being, as was said in the play Chicago, one thing that people love is a reformed evildoer; the fact that she's made mistakes and had learnt from them appeals to many people. She also has the nostalgia of being the first major antagonist that most people saw in the show and is the more blatantly sympathetic; King Sombra's motivations were never mentioned, Discord just wanted to have fun and make a world he liked better, and Queen Chrysalis, though sympathetic when we realise her motivation in Canterlot Wedding was to take care of her subjects, wasn't sympathetic until you really thought about what she was trying to do and that her motivations tie into the pressures that come with leadership.

With Luna, we know right away that her wrong doing was caused by her feeling over shadowed/undervalued and the resulting resentment, something that most viewers would be able to relate to easily and thus allows them to feel a connection to her. She also appears vulnerable in her first appearance and thus had the entire first season of people seeing her this way, giving her a similar appeal point to Fluttershy in that people want to look after her. Then during Luna Eclipsed she's shown a having difficulty fitting in due to her not understanding modern mannerisms ans sensibilities as well as having trouble putting her past problems behind her, which again are things many people can relate to.

Also for the first season she was and, to a degree, still is a mystery; it's similar to why Mew is one of the favourite legendary Pokemon even though there are similar Pokemon from around the same time (Celebi) or other legendary Pokemon that most people caught much earlier, Mew was the first real mystery in the series just like Luna was the first mysterious character. Because of this people were able to interpret her in all sorts of ways from impish to regretful to child like to having difficulty adjusting to changes in society, even though now people can just skip ahead to Luna Eclipsed (and I know there have been lots of times where I'll start watching a show and end up looking up all the episodes for characters I like) a lot of people have built her up enough and created so many interpretations of her that even if she doesn't have as much mystery or time to build mistique, most people can still find something of her that they like.

There's also the fact that many might see her as being the more fun and approachable sister. Because Celestia is older and has always been there, not to mention represents a time of the day that has always been openly appreciated and has had centuries to build her image she can end up being associated with the old fashioned way while Luna's time has only been appreciated fairly recently and we've seen her trying to reinvent herself to suit the times and that she has a chance to be loved and appreciated. And thus she has an image of reaching out to her subjects and taking a more hooves on approach to solving their problems since she doesn't have 1000 years of dealing with the same basic issues over and over

Basically most people see Celestia as being a Mother figure to Equestria and then take it further and think of Luna as being Equestria's fun Aunt.

Gosh, I just can't believe the Nightmare Rarity arc is in first. It was totally the worst arc of the three, in just about every way possible. Personally I like the Chrysalis Returns arc best, though to be fair I haven't gotten a chance to read the big mac arc yet. Still from what I read of the preview even it is better than the crap that was Nightmare Rarity.

  • Conal Murphy - 11 years ago

What I find hilarious is the comic which has the most votes is getting all the hate in the comments while the one which has been voted for the least is getting defended the most in the comments (not that I disagree with the comments, In fact I hold a similar stance in that 9-10 was the best arc imo so far).

  • Jerken - 11 years ago

Anyone who didn't vote for Zen Big Mac hasn't read it yet.

    Those FOALS.

  • a smart guy - 11 years ago

Wow, this is why I hate EQD. Literally the stupidest pony fans.

  • Mojo - 11 years ago

And of course the weakest arc is in first place, while the strongest is in last. Really though Nightmare Rarity was an interesting idea and the arc had some good moments but Luna was I feel characterized terribly, she felt like the typical Pre S2 fanon idea of her for most of it which was boring back then and is now both boring and contradictory. Newsflash people in pretty much every canon appearance Luna has been portrayed as confident, outgoing and strong.

Though honestly I can barely even care about Luna anymore her disgusting rabid fanbase have nearly ruined her entirely for me. I just don't understand what she's actually done in canon to deserve such a fanbase.

  • Ed Thorpe - 11 years ago

The Big Mac arc is my fav by far. Lighthearted and funny. But don't get me wrong, i still like the serious story arcs still.

  • Danezor - 11 years ago

The Luna arc was by far the worst. The Chrysalis arc was pretty good, but it has a few sappy moments that I'm not too fond of.

Big Mac's, however, has the most well-executed gags, great references, and non-campy writing to go along with it. The only thing I truly liked from Luna's arc was the repeated use of "dingus." That's about it.

    Big Mac's should be winning.

  • keikomastergillian123324 - 11 years ago

the first place option should be in last place. it had absolutely horrid writing lol

  • xxxultradeathxxx - 11 years ago

I agree with the electrical appliance. The digusting Luna fanbrats ruin everything.

  • 42.5 watt light bulb - 11 years ago

I liked the Big Mac arc the most.

It had the well-executed jokes, honestly.

And if the Nightmarity arc is seriously winning because of Luna, then I am going to flip my shit. Fuck Luna. Fuck her fans. Fuck everything that has to do with her. Fuck the biased poll voters. Fuck Luna. She doesn't goddamn DESERVE to win ANYTHING.

    Good day.

  • ZimmyG - 11 years ago

Katie Cook and Andy Price are an unbeatable combo, I would buy anything they make. Even if it wasn't pony related.

  • mycutiemarkisagun - 11 years ago

    Yeah Nightmare Rarity was..........okay................

Cook + Price tour de force ftw

  • Rockpath5 - 11 years ago

Big Mac is losing? The Fuck? That was the best by far. Did half of the people voting even read the comics?

  • Millstone - 11 years ago

Luna wins every poll she appears in.
The nightmare arc is Luna's arc.
    You do the math.

The sad part is: it was a terrible story for the character, pulling out a Dark Phoenix / Parallax retcon on her past.
