I discovered hobby games 35 years ago with Charge! by Brigadier Peter Young followed shortly by Dungeons & Dragons. Before that I played family board games & card games & loved them (hated chess though & still do).
I started playing Euros in 1991 or so when you had to get the rules translated by the shopkeeper, & MtG in the Beta set. Since then I have played a few other games & my current favourites by genre are LotR, Terra Mystica, Warhammer Fantasy, D&D 4e, Totaler Krieg, Shadowfist & the new shiny, Eldritch Horror.
I discovered modern tabletop games 3 years ago with Settlers of Catan. Before that I played rarely only games like Monopoly, Risk, Clue, Belote, some old roll-and-move games and some other old-fashion card games. I didn't like those games too much. Then I discovered all sorts fo different modern games. My 2 favourite are LOTR: LCG and Race for the Galaxy but I like lots of various game. I have learned and played more than 100 games: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/mado78
