Do You Think Scootaloo is a Stronger Character as a Pegasus that Can't Fly?

    Thanks for the spoiler. :/

I think Scoots inability to fly would only make her a stronger character if we had a REASON for why she can't fly. Right now she as a character development is disabled because there's no rhyme or reason behind her being grounded. What she has to overcome is so vauge that there's nothing for her to latch onto to work against or overcome or accept. I mean for example Snowflake can fly, so its obviously not under developed wings. Right now it's just loose and undirected. Like with Twilight learning magic we saw progression over the series, because she had goals and things she could obtain. Scoots to be a stronger character in the -I'm disabled/I can't fly/I'm an anomaly- department needs reason and direction.

I added up the percentages in this poll, and they came out to 100.39%. Any math wiz out there know how that works? I imagine it has something to do with the number of votes not dividing equally into the choices, but I didn't think that'd cause it to be over 100%.

Oh, and I'm completely off topic.... Well this is awkward. Uh, YAY SCOOTALOO! YOU ROCK! WOO-HOO!

By Faust, the force is strong with this one.

Anypony who believes Scootaloo is disabled just from what we've seen so far is dramatically overreading in to the show. We know she can't fly at the moment. We have no idea how common this is among Pegasus ponies at this age, although we can imagine that at the very least she is very late in developing her flight skills. Rainbow Dash mentioned that she may or may not fly in the future, and Scootaloo never mentions any medical conditions that would prevent her from doing this, which means that in all likelihood she's just developing late. Remember that Fluttershy was still learning how to fly at this age too, and I think she's become a decent flyer (not RD good, but not bad either).

So if the show decides to make Scootaloo fly later, don't be overly shocked or say that the show is contradicting itself. They are very much leaving that possibility open, and I approve of that. Personally, I'm rooting for her to learn to fly later, but for now she learned she was awesome either way, which is good. :)

    @Stormfront and HalflingPony
I agree that it will make a better story if she never flies. And yes, I agree that being disabled is not a "good" thing and it's not something to be proud of or to promote. But if Scootaloo someday oevcomes her condition and learns to fly...that turns the lesson here into a broken aesop. If Scootaloo can't fly and we love and accept her...that tells disabled people in the real world that they can still be loved and accepted for who they are regardless of their condition. If Scootaloo overcomes her problem...that tells disabled people in the real world that they can overcome their mental retardation, their missing limbs, their genetic diseases. Thing is...some of them might not be able to. For people who have been dealt a bad hand and can't overcome their problems, will never overcome their problems...showing Scootaloo magically overcoming her problem in ways that they can't...that doesn't help them. Showing Scootaloo never overcoming her problem, but being loved and accepted anyway...I think that's a better message for them. And for us.

I'm glad that they were brave enough to tackle this. A lot of people love Scootaloo. She's our favorite chicken. Even if she can't fly, we still love her. Look at Derpy. Maybe she's mentally disabled, or maybe she's just cross eyed and dumb. But we still love her. But Derpy's condition resonated with somebody, and they freaked out and make a big deal out of it. *Poof* Derpy removed. It's absolutely amazing to me that somebody would see a depiction of a disabled character, who is LOVED...absolutely loved...and be angry about it. We don't love Scootaloo because she can't fly. We love her because of who she is, and her not being able to fly really isn't that important. She's not a token, obligatory black character. She's not disabled to invoke pity, or to get us to eel sorry for her. She's who she is, and that's ok. We love her.

It's unfortunate that it takes a pegasi unable to fly for us as humans to see this and be ok with it. We don't have wings...so that makes it "less real" to us. Derpy was too real for some people.

  • UrbanMysticDee - 10 years ago

No. How she ACTS (or how she is written to act) determines whether she is a stronger character or not. I don't care if she can fly or not, but I'm not rooting for her to be disabled, cheering "yeah, never fly or I'll be pissed and the show will suck forever!" I can't sink to that depth of perverse wickedness to actually WANT someone to be disabled, fictional or not, for my enjoyment (to make the show "better"), or for any other reason.

Being disabled is NOT a moral failure, but it is also not an accomplishment. It is not winning the cosmic lottery; it is not something to celebrate.

This poll is too early. They have barely even touched the issue; never even really mentioning it save in the latest episode. Bring out this poll after they've worked with it some more.

  • lordelliott - 10 years ago

This poll is over. "Yes" won. Time for a new poll!

I dont care if you hate me for saying it but NO SHE WILL FLY. I DONT CARE WHAT PEOPLE SAY. I WILL SEE SCOOTALOOO FLY

  • Liana Verwood - 10 years ago

I believe that while Scootaloo is a much stronger character by being awesome despite the lack of a genetic gift, what ruined the episode for me was that this was the time to delve into her backstory - finding out WHY she hasn't been able to fly, and learning that she doesn't necessarily NEED to fly to become a great pony.
Instead we got an excuse of 'Her wings aren't capable of sustaining her weight' (already falsified by Snowflake and Pound Cake), and the same character development for Rainbow Dash as from the previous episode, done much better.
This actually was a good episode (and completely removes all reason for 'Daring Don't' to exist), I'm just disappointed that Scootaloo didn't receive the much-needed character development she deserved here.

  • silver hands - 10 years ago

As the show said. Scootaloo must learn that it doesn't matter whether or not she learns to fly. Only after that may she be allowed to fly. But once again it doesn't matter if she does or doesn't.
Here's how Scootaloo should develop. She should have a arc where she tries to learn to fly trying to be just like Dash, and fail, this will show that dreams don't always come true. but in addition she learns that Dash is worthy of praise not for her skills, but her loyalty . This teaches that an pony's true worth is not in their ability, but in their character. From then on we should see Scootaloo living up to the ideal of Rainbow Dash but she still wants a flying cutie mark. Later on living up to this ideal should lead her to gaining her cutie mark in something other than flying, her friends expect her to be upset, but she isn't because she has GROWN UP, accepted the fact that she isn't Dash, and has moved on.

  • Melanie - 10 years ago

Not anymore. There should be an episode like this much earlier as it was always obvious she couldn't fly. So I voted no.

  • HalflingPony - 10 years ago

    @Bryce Kanyon

It's not about being "normal". Her motivation to fly shouldn't be because without flight she is somehow "less" of a pegasus. No- it's about opportunity, independence and pride of self.

If Scootaloo can never fly, she will always be an awesome pony, regardless. But she will be limited. She will never be able to visit Cloudsdale and other pegasus facilities without mechanical aid. She'll be completely shut out of many opportunities she might have otherwise had working in the weather industry. And one of her biggest dreams- being as good a stunt flyer as Rainbow Dash- will remain unfulfilled.

Are any of those things life ruining catastrophes? Of course not. She'll still be able to visit Cloudsdale- just less conveniently. She'll have plenty of employment opportunity on the ground. She'll be able to re-align her dreams with what she *is* capable of and take immeasurable pride in her true talents. But as long as there's any chance she could learn to fly, she should pursue it with all four hooves.

Just think how much of an incredible boost to her self-worth it would be if she *were* to learn to fly. Being able to say "I did this; I overcame obstacles nopony else ever thought I would," is a very powerful thing.

It's like RD's sonic rainboom. She's an awesome pony in her own right even without that ability. But look at all the things that accomplishment has gotten her: the attention of the Wonderbolts, the opportunity to perform at a royal wedding and an even deeper life-long bond with her best friends than she might have had otherwise.

At the buffet table of life, it's always better to have full access to all the dishes, rather than be stuck with just the salad bar. Even if you really like salad, there will always be that one pot of steaming hot rice you wish you could try.

Sorry for going on so long, but I have a very personal connection with a couple of kids who have metaphorically spat in the face of doctors who told them they would never walk and should never even try. This sort of thing hits close to home.

  • Beatfox - 10 years ago

I chose "I don't care either way". It's not what situations a character is placed in that defines their depth, it's how the character responds to those situations. Scootaloo (or her writers, as it were) has the ability to show depth of character regardless of which way things end up going - achieving her dream of flying can bring its own set of challenges, as with achieving any dream or goal in real life.

  • Stormfront - 10 years ago

while I would not mind if she did eventually fly, I feel it will be better if she never does.. because I personally think as someone who is actually "disabled" (learning disability) too few kids shows have positive examples of the disabled ....

Like the CMC I was harassed though my school years for being disabled I think if shows put the effort in and had more positive examples of those of us who are disabled (ether mentally or physically) it could help reduce bullying further....

  • Poppun - 10 years ago

I actually hope that she DOES fly eventually. Yes it's nice having an example for people in similar situations, but not when it gets in the way of something that's important to them and it's always seemed to me that eventually learning to fly is important to Scootaloo. While what she does now is great, she could still enjoy using her scooter after she learns to fly. And you could still have character development through adversity, but instead she would have to go through a lot in order to fly rather than accepting the fact that she can't (it still gives her similar character development, but with a happy ending as well).

Yes it's important to learn to live with disappointment, but it's also important to learn to live with a good outcome without expecting it not to last (which, unfortunately people tend to have a lot of trouble with)

  • Ben B - 10 years ago

so I picked other, and I feel that it deserves a small explanation. I think it doesn't really make her character exactly stronger per se, since I was lead to assume that she couldn't fly from the beginning. what this episode did do was confirm that for me which simply confirms her to be as in-depth of a character as I had once assumed (I feel like in-depth is a better word choice here since the term "strong" can insinuate many different things about the character, rather then how appealing and rounded the character is, which I think is what you were going for here).

  • Matt - 10 years ago

For the time being yes, but eventually It will get stale.

Eventually they will have to get Scootaloo to learn how to fly, that way we can see
how Rainbow Dash will train her.

  • Mojo - 10 years ago

Yes, infinitely so, makes her much more unique and makes her tenacity even more admirable.

  • Tenco1 - 10 years ago

    @Somebrony

Or it's not size that matters and she's just crippled, like the Lord Faust intended.

    #faustdementalism

  • Somebrony - 10 years ago

If the Iron Will sized Roidrage / Snowflake can fly with his Scootaloo-sized wings, I see no reason why Scootaloo should not be able to fly once she figures out what she is missing to make her wings work. Scootaloo is obsessed with the physical/mechanical part of flight but Snowflake and Pound Cake prove that she must be missing something else that probably comes naturally to normal pegasi.

I expect Scootaloo to fly eventually assuming FiM runs long enough for the CMCs to get their marks.

  • silvadel - 10 years ago

I seem to be lonely but I do think that she needs to eventually be able to fly. She doesn't need to be able to fly WELL and her primary mode of locomotion could still be the scooter but she needs to be whole. I also think the CMC need their cutie marks and soon. At any rate, having had things where I had to work tremendously hard at to reach below average, I think that should be where this could go. And it would be satisfying to see her actually reach the clouds even if she wasn't good at it.

  • jonando - 10 years ago

if she does fly let her do it at the very end of the show or maybe some epic the fate of equestria is in danger

  • MM - 10 years ago

In fact I was hoping that she doesn't fly, cause she's already awesome and flying is overrated.

    SCOOTALOO RULES.

  • Marvelous TK - 10 years ago

Dash said it best. Maybe she will, maybe she won't, but she's awesome either way.

  • MM - 10 years ago

Scootaloo doesn't need flying, she's awesome the way she is.

  • Constant Clover - 10 years ago

Lots of pegasi fly! How many can ride a scooter like her?

  • Bryce Kanyon - 10 years ago

Honestly, we all know Scootaloo is never destined to be a flyer but then we should really be asking ourselves this: Why should ALL Pegasi have to take flight as if it were normal? Because the way I see it, normal is overrated and honestly Scootaloo's scooter tricks are simply the coolest I've seen and even if her wings can't get her off the ground they still make for a great motor. The whole episode with the bit of Scootaloo's insecurity of her inability to fly, in some way reminds me of what Autistic youth have gone through trying to be as society deems "normal". But even with the physical, mental, and emotional disabilities, there still remains those who would eventually become the most famous in the land it even happened to Albert Einstein, a man well known for his genius even if he wasn't one of the best scholarly students.

And while I still feel slightly disappointed that the CMC still just don't get what they were truly destined for, that they are just good at being themselves, perhaps even for this season it's best if they don't find out too soon. Because let's face it boys and girls, the day the CMC ever truly discover their destinies and finally gain their cutie marks would most likely be the day that the show is nearly coming to an end. But give it time, perhaps Scootaloo will realize she doesn't need to be as strong a flier as Rainbow Dash to be happy that she was already at her best when riding her scooter. But if they ever do figure their destinies out, maybe (Just maybe) they may just redeem themselves from that bloody awful performance at the talent show three seasons ago. But right now, we have the rest of a season to look forward to and I do believe we can expect some big things to happen... Even a surprise or two that we would least expect to happen.

Where are the results of the previous poll?

  • Jay Z - 10 years ago

At one point in the episode a part me was like "THEY BETTER NOT LET HER FLY" because ya know being a disabled pony made for a much better character to me.

  • Frith - 10 years ago

Character development through adversity. 'Yes" will win, no contest.
